El Paso police report zero traffic deaths over 4th of July weekend

El Paso law enforcement officers made more than 50 driving-while-intoxicated arrests and saw no traffic-related deaths over the Fourth of July holiday, authorities said.

The El Paso Police Department’s DWI Task Force had a unified Fourth of July enforcement operation with the Texas Department of Public Safety from Friday to Sunday, July 3-5, El Paso police spokesman Sgt. Robert Gomez said.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office also reported no fatalities and no major incidents during the Independence Day holiday weekend outside the El Paso city limits.

The Sheriff’s Office, with partner agencies, deployed the county DWI Task Force along with increased patrols and high-visibility enforcement, including at the Red Sand desert off-roading area for “Operation 4th of July” during the three-day weekend.

“These results show what we can accomplish when law enforcement and the community work together,” Sheriff Oscar Ugarte said in a statement. “Last year marked the first Independence Day holiday in recent years without a major incident or traffic fatality in our areas of responsibility, and I’m proud we achieved that again this year.”
