Lake Possum Kingdom is among nine reservoirs the Brazos River Authority has designated for a stage 1 drought watch, according to a media release.
The drought watch declaration was issued when areas near the reservoirs recently reached a trigger level associated with the Palmer Hydrologic Drought Index, an indicator of the level of wet or dry conditions within a particular area.
The river authority said in a media release Monday the purpose of the watch is to to raise awareness of the developing drought situation and to achieve a voluntary 5% reduction of water use.
The watch does not include any lakes that supply water to Wichita Falls or neighboring communities although Possum Kingdom is a popular recreations spot for many in the region.
Those reservoirs that are affected are:
The U.S. Drought Monitor shows most of Texas experiencing drought or abnormally dry conditions.
The National Weather Service has predicted sporadic rain and thunderstorms for much of north and central parts of the state Tuesday evening through Sunday morning.
