West Texas schools and athletes were well represented at the UIL Regional Tennis Tournaments, bringing home 13 championships and advancing multiple singles and doubles to the state tournament.
The state tennis tournament will be held at the Blossom Tennis Center, Annemarie Tennis Center and Northside Tennis Center in San Antonio on May 7-8.
Here is a roundup of local West Texas and San Angelo athletes who performed at the regional tennis meet.
San Angelo Central duo advances to state after strong regional showing
Central had plenty of athletes representing the tennis program in nearly every bracket at the Class 6A Region I tournament in Arlington.
In the girls doubles bracket, Central’s Hannah Hartin and Adithi Podaralla advanced to the state tournament after a 3-4 playoff win over Coppell’s Sejal Singh and Mihika Modi, winning 6-1, 6(7)-7(9), 6-1.
Wall’s Katelynn Holtman wins 3A Region I championship
It was a showdown between two Lady Hawks in the girls singles event as Katleyn Holtman beat teammate Ameila Taylor in a tight match 6-2, 1-6, 6-4
In the boys singles bracket, Wall’s Paul Nelson advanced to the state tournament with a win in the 3-4 playoff match, beating Peaster’s Tag Hooks 6-1, 6-3.
Mason sweeps 2A Region IV titles
The Mason tennis team added five more region championships to their record book after sweeping all five events in the Region IV-2A meet in Corpus Christi on Tuesday.
The Punchers will send a total of 14 athletes to the state championship, one year after earning gold in all three doubles events.
Russell Watson claimed the goal medal in boys singles, downing Schulenberg’s Caden Herzik 6-0, 6-4 while Georgia Hicks won the girls singles, beating San Saba’s Caitlin Mays 6-4, 6-3.
Keegan Ratliff and Cooper Ratliff defeated teammates Cade Dudney and Kelton Jordan 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to win the boys doubles title.
Taylor Bierschwale and Kinley Wenzel beat teammates Cole Swan and Sophie Ashlschwede 6-0, 6-0 to win the girls doubles championship.
Finally, Corbin Martinez and Heidi Smith won the mixed doubles title 6-4, 6-0 over teammates Jaxson Holbrook and Camille Schmidt.
Reagan County nabs two doubles titles in 2A Region I tournament
After a strong showing in last year’s state tournament, Reagan County earned gold in two of the double events in this year’s regional meet.
The team of David Alonso and Gunnar Stroud won the boys double event for Reagan County, downing Fort Hancock’s Manuel Jimenez and Ethan Alvarez 6-1, 6-0.
In the mixed doubles bracket, Reagan County’s Colton Kuykendall and Ashley Lopez beat Fort Hancock’s Neveah Gonzalez and Patrick Hernandez in a competitive final match 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
Miles’ Syler Delane beat last year’s boys singles state champion, Reagan County’s Leevi Knight, for the region championship 6-3, 6-4.
Christoval’s Zoe Askins won the girls singles regional title with a final round win, a 6-2, 6-0 win over Gruver’s Carter Holloway.
Irion County, Olfen and Menard earn titles in Class 1A Region II
After a state semifinal finish last season, Olfen’s Grant Halsell is back in the state tournament after winning the Region II title, beating Benjamin’s Keegan Hayes in a nailbiter 5-7, 7(8)-6(6), 6-3.
In the girls singles bracket, it was a final match between two teammates, Irion County’s Baylee Rainey and Bradie Garza, with Rainey taking the gold 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
The Menard duo of Zeke Hernandez and Cado Bannowsky won the boys doubles bracket with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Sanderson’s William Guillen and Asa Coyan.
In the girls doubles bracket, Irion County’s Presli Cormier and Isabella Garcia advanced to the state tournament after winning the 3-4 playoff match 6-2, 6-3 over Northside’s Ellen Couch and Aubrey Phillips.
