As the Dallas Cowboys hit the final stretch before training camp begins, Dak Prescott is excited to face the pressure that comes with the attempt to get the Cowboys back to national relevance and he’s excited about new draft pick Caleb Downs.
As much pressure as Prescott faces, DeMarvion Overshown may be the Cowboy with the most to prove as he looks to put together a healthy season. And Brandon Aubrey is more hesitant than one might think about the idea of a four-point field goal. The Cowboys’ training camp begins on July 29.
Here is how Dallas begins their last week before training camp begins and the offseason ends.
Dak Prescott Caleb Downs
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is coming off one of the best seasons of his career and says he definitely feels pressure for the team to have better results in 2026. He appeared at a virtual meet-and-greet with rookie Caleb Downs and embraced the pressure.
”That’s the one thing I love about the Cowboys nation and being a player of the Cowboys is, it’s Super Bowl or bust,” Prescott said on DallasCowboys.com. “And truthfully, that’s the only reason you play this game. And so if that’s not your mindset, if that’s not your mindset as a fan, then to me, you don’t have the right passion. You’re not a true winner. So absolutely, we’re working every day for it…”
“Whether it be competing away from the game or even in the game when we’re competing, that’s why we have players like Caleb (Downs), changed our defensive coordinator, that scheme, and super excited about what we’re going to offer you guys.”
He then heaped praise on Downs, which has become a common thing since he was drafted in the first round in April.
All the great things he’s done, the way that he approaches the game, his mentality and all of that, it’s what you want,” Prescott said of Downs. “But at the end of the day, it’s about putting on the pads and go making plays. But we couldn’t have asked for a better rookie, a man to step in. And understand really just the responsibility that’s kind of not necessarily on his shoulders, but that a new defense is trying to be great and trying to create an identity, and how much of a big part he’s going to play in it.”
“He’s just done everything right. It makes me think back to my rookie year, and it’s more of just about keeping your mouth quiet and earning respect from the other people and just making sure you’re doing the right things, and Caleb has done all of that and plus. That’s why we’ve been so welcoming, he makes it easy to welcome, but we’re super excited for the fall and watch him make plays and get the ball back to me.”
DeMarvion Overshown
Perhaps the Dallas Cowboy with the most to prove this year is linebacker DeMarvion Overshown, who is looking to bounce back from a string of injuries that have limited early in his career. As an example, last year ESPN had him going into the season ranked as the No. 8 off-ball linebacker. This year he isn’t on their top 10 (he did check in as an honorable mention) but offered a tantalizing bit about him.
ESPN wrote: “Overshown played in six games as he recovered from an MCL, ACL and PCL tear. Despite his absences, he has plenty of believers. ‘He moves like a safety. Incredibly talented. I want to see how he does this year after the injuries,’ an NFC scout told us.”
Brandon Aubrey
ESPN also polled kickers on what they think about awarding four points for a 60-yard field goal, and most were for an idea that doesn’t seem to be on the NFL radar at the moment. Aubrey, who would have much to gain with this, has a more nuanced view.
“I think it’s a little weird,” he told ESPN. “Kind of incentivizes you to stall the drive in a certain spot. It makes you really, really question your playcalling around that 50-yard line area. It’s interesting for kickers that have the leg to get it there, maybe (there’s) a little bit more value there. But kind of perverses the incentives of football where the goal is to get it as close to the other person’s half as possible.
”So, I’m conflicted on it. I like it for the kickers. I think it’s a nightmare for the playcallers.”
