The Stop Sign of Texas is known for its Blizzard Treats, and this summer marks the 40th anniversary of the dessert made famous at the Dairy Queen chain. Here’s a look into its history, and how people can celebrate.
Invented in 1985 by Samuel Temperato, the Blizzard Treat sold more than 100 million units in its first year, according to a DQ news release. Today, the treat is known for its standard red spoon and unspillable-upside-down flip.

“Generations of Texans have grown up with the Blizzard Treat as a summertime staple,” said Lou Romanus, CEO of the Texas Dairy Queen Operators’ Council, in the news release. “It’s more than a treat, it’s part of our culture. On this anniversary we want to thank our loyal fans who have made the Blizzard Treat a Texas favorite for four decades.”
The Blizzard Treat has offered more than 170 flavor variations since its inception, with some of its most popular being the Oreo and Reese’s flavors, or the standard Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough.
Dairy Queen launched the Blizzard of the Month campaign in 2023, offering limited-time, unique flavor options. July’s Blizzard of the Month is a Superman Cake Batter Cookie Dough Blizzard Treat, combining sugar cookie dough, sprinkles and cake batter flavor with the company’s soft serve.
Dairy Queen will celebrate the milestone with fan engagement and deals on social media, as well as events at Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, which the brand has partnered with since 1984.
Miracle Treat Day on July 31 will support these hospitals by donating $1 or more from every Blizzard Treat purchased at participating locations to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
The celebration continues with the announcement of the Summer 2025 Blizzard Treat Menu:
