After making J.J. McCarthy look like a legitimate superstar, the Cowboys defense is once again taking fire from the fanbase. Public Enemy No. 1 for most is defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus. Now with the playoffs all but officially off the table, even Jerry and Stephen Jones- in new comments made Tuesday- seem to be holding his feet to the fire, a notable departure from their earlier votes of confidence. With another change at DC now apparently possible, it’s worth looking at viable candidates from around the NFL… even though the best should-have-been option, Aden Durde, is currently gearing up for his own postseason run with the Seahawks.
They’re basically lame ducks now, but the Cowboys won’t be phoning it in over their final three games. That’s according to Jerry Jones, anyway, who is vowing the team will be competitive until the end, even if a few late-season wins result in a less-advantageous draft slot.
Among the players to really watch down the home stretch is Javonte Williams. He’s been a revelation and the Cowboys would love to keep him, but will his successful return to form in 2025 mean he’s priced himself out of Dallas? If so, Kenneth Gainwell might be a name to remember… although the pre-draft season will have legions of fans clamoring for the Cowboys to take Notre Dame’s Jeremiyah Love, who just declared he’ll go pro.
The Chargers will be riding into AT&T Stadium with one of the league’s hottest quarterbacks. Justin Herbert is peaking at exactly the right time, and the L.A. pass rush has found its rhythm behind Khalil Mack, Tuli Tuipulotu, and midseason trade pickup Odafe Oweh. Oweh has breathed new life into his career with the change of scenery… and rejuvenated the Bolts’ defense in the process. And the team has brought back a familiar face to their secondary, perhaps signaling that they expect an all-out air war on Sunday.
Micah Parsons is back in Dallas… but only as an expectant dad waiting on the birth of his third child. His return back to DFW, though, may include a stop on the operating table for his ACL injury. Also in league news, the Dolphins may be ready to bench their star quarterback as they search for answers for their future. And while Philip Rivers’s improbable comeback made for a fun story, noted football author Jeff Pearlman is asking why more people aren’t stating the obvious about the 44-year-old quarterback: get past last Sunday’s warm and fuzzy headlines, and he simply wasn’t very good.
