Corpus Christi Monastery closes its doors after 59 years, nuns to move

After 59 years of service, the Corpus Christi Monastery officially closed its doors Sunday, April 26, in the Lower Valley.

The monastery at 451 Mockingbird Lane was run by the Perpetual Adorers of the Most Holy Sacrament, also known as the Adoratrices. The monastery opened in 1967.

The nuns at the monastery are cloistered contemplative nuns. They dedicate their lives centered on Eucharistic adoration, often in prayer and adoration for the church, the city and the many intentions entrusted to them.

Mother Alma Ruth del Espíritu Santo, mother superior of the Order of the Perpetual Adorers of the Blessed Sacrament, said in a statement that the sisters would be moving to the Blessed Sacrament at the Expiatory Chapel of the Monastery of Christ the King, at 145 N. Cotton St.

“We take comfort in the fact that the presence of the Adoratrices may still remain in this city, (at the monastery on Cotton Street) where the community gladly continues to welcome all the faithful who wish to adore Our Lord Exposed in the Most Holy Sacrament of the altar,” she stated.

The legacy of the sisters will remain woven in the spiritual life of the Catholic diocese, she said.

“We are infinitely grateful for the support received by this community during the 59 years they were present in the monastery of Corpus Christi, and we entrust ourselves to your prayers that we may remain faithful on the path that God has laid out for us; likewise, please know that you are constantly in our prayers,” she stated.

Diocese officials said there are no plans yet for the monastery building.
