Education reporter Olivia Garrett won first place in the Star Reporter of the Year category for Class 2A.

The articles that won her the honor were a two-part series about an initiative to restore the water quality of Baffin Bay, a two-part series about the doctor shortage in Corpus Christi and a story about how the Corpus Christi Independent School District attempts to track down students who are chronically absent from school.

“Excellent and commendable work on both crisis and resilience that provides nuanced perspectives and contextual information,” a judge wrote. “Broad sourcing, used well. I like her accessible writing style that manages to convey important and complicated information in a readable, narrative way.

“I’m especially impressed with the solutions reporting and how grounded it is in what is in progress and not just what is speculative.”

Former Caller-Times photographer Angela Piazza won first place in the video category for a video about the Bringing Baffin Back initiative, which accompanied Garrett’s series.

“Striking visuals, good sound, story line easy to follow and provided viewer a fuller sense of the story,” a judge wrote.

Entertainment reporter John Oliva won third place in the Diana R. Fuentes Freedom of Information category for a story about unsolved homicide cases in Corpus Christi.

Garrett won third place in the specialty reporting category.

Enterprise reporter Kirsten Crow and Garrett received an honorable mention in the team effort category for stories about the drought in Corpus Christi.

Photos by Piazza for the Baffin Bay stories received an honorable mention in the photojournalism category.

Sports reporter Quinton Martinez received an honorable mention in the sports feature category.

Savannah Williams, a graphic designer for the Caller-Times’ parent company, USA TODAY Co., received an honorable mention in the Designer of the Year category for her designs of Caller-Times print editions.
