The postseason has arrived for cross country teams in the Lone Star State.
UIL district meets are already in the rear view mirror across the Texas Panhandle, with a number of schools and individual runners qualifying for upcoming regional meets. The top three teams and top 10 individuals in each district advanced to regionals.
On Thursday, Oct. 9, all four Amarillo ISD schools competed in the District 3-5A cross country meet at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.
Amarillo High won the girls team event with 44 points to beat out Tascosa. Led by senior Braylee Cothrin, who placed third with a time of 20 minutes, 15.51 seconds, five Sandies finished in the top 15 individually.
Cothrin’s teammate, Kinley Davis, finished fourth in District 3-5A after reaching the state meet as a sophomore in 2024.
“Yes, we had two in the top five, but, you know, they’ve trained together as a team since June,” Amarillo High coach Jonathan Woodward said. “Really, the whole culture of the team pushing each other has given a platform for those two to get up there and do what our team needed them to do today. The team competed. They did well. They earned this win today.”
The Lady Rebels scored 76 points to secure their spot as the event’s runner-up. Ivana Ibarra was Tascosa’s top finisher, completing the 5K course in 20:54.59 for ninth place.
In the boys race, Palo Duro finished third in the team standings. Dons senior Abdihafit Mohamed was the event’s runner-up with a time of 16:26.44.
Caprock’s Ayden Vasquez, Amarillo High’s Jackson Newman and Tascosa’s Bishop Brown all placed in the top 10 individually, earning spots at the Region I-5A meet.
