A child was struck in a crosswalk on the way to Mann STEAM Academy Thursday morning, a school notice to parents said.
Mann Principal Chad Drake said in the notice that first responders arrived shortly after the incident to treat the girl who was found to not be seriously injured.
“We are grateful for the quick response of emergency personnel and relieved that our student is safe,” Drake wrote. “This incident serves as an important reminder that every member of our Abilene ISD community plays a role in keeping our children safe.”
According to Rick Tomlin, Abilene Police Department public information coordinator, the girl was struck at the corner of Mimosa Drive and Vogel Street, prompting a call at 7:21 a.m. of a pedestrian hit by a car. She was later transported to a hospital by private auto.
Tomlin had no information yet on any citations possibly issued to the driver.
The intersection on the southwest corner of the Mann campus is a busy four-way stop on school mornings. The rising sun shines directly in the eyes of drivers approaching from the west.
Drivers are required by law to pay attention at all times on the road but especially in school zones and crosswalks.
Drake reminded parents to:
“The safety of our students is our highest priority, and we are asking for the partnership of every driver in Abilene,” Drake wrote. “Together, we can prevent accidents and ensure our children arrive at and leave school safely each day.”
“Thank you for doing your part to protect our kids.”
