Some folks threw candy, other folks threw cheese.
Mild weather and an accompanying car show brought a good-sized crowd to downtown Abilene Saturday for the Veterans Freedom Parade.
With the government shutdown keeping airmen from Dyess Air Force Base from participating in the parade, many were still seen attending out of uniform with families and friends.
Equestrian groups, JROTC students, and the combined Abilene and Cooper high schools marching bands, along with Wylie ISD’s Pure Gold Band, kept the parade lively.
But it was Great Lakes Cheese with their giant inflatable cow on the back of their trailer who seemed to start a new tradition.
Instead of throwing the usual candy to the kids, they reached into a cooler and threw individual snack-sized packages of cheddar cheese.
Note to self: Bring crackers to the Dec. 2 Christmas parade…
