If you tuned in to Cincinnati Bearcats basketball in their season-opener against Western Carolina, you missed a familiar voice.
Terry Nelson, from the Bob Huggins Final Four and Elite Eight teams, was not on the TV or radio broadcast.
Not to worry.
Nelson had a medical procedure the day before the game that required him to miss the opener. He did watch UC’s 94-63 win over the Catamounts, which featured 18-point debuts from Baba Miller, Moustapha Thiam and Shon Abaev. It was good preparation for his return.
“I’ll be back Friday full of energy and ready to go,” Nelson said.
In his absence, former UC point guard Steve Logan joined Anthony Mazzini on the ESPN+ offering and the versatile Mo Egger took on color commentary with Dan Hoard in addition to his host/engineer duties. Egger has also filled in on play-by-play in football and basketball.
“I’m back on TV and Steve is back on radio,” Nelson said of Friday’s home game vs. Georgia State.

Once the non-conference, ESPN+ portion of the UC schedule is up, Nelson will return to the radio with long-time partner Hoard. In no means was this a Tony Pike dismissed/returned scenario, where the UC Hall of Fame quarterback was let go by iHeart, then rehired a week later.
Nelson is an independent contractor, like Pike was briefly. The 6-foot-6 forward who scored UC’s first bucket in the Final Four against Michigan’s Fab Five, will be on the air with Mazzini and The Enquirer’s Kelsey Conway, Friday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. on ESPN+ when the Bearcats host Georgia State.
Once the Big 12 schedule starts, the Bearcats will be on various linear networks.
