Who is Zach McCambley? Reds traded Rece Hinds for pitcher from Marlins

The Cincinnati Reds announced they selected right-handed pitcher Zach McCambley from Triple-A Louisville, and also recalled reliever Luis Mey from the Bats, as they designated for assignment left-handed pitcher Brandon Leibrandt and right-handed pitcher Lyon Richardson.

McCambley was acquired by the Reds in a trade May 21 with the Miami Marlins for outfielder Rece Hinds.

In two relief appearances with the Bats since the trade, McCambley posted a 2.45 ERA, striking out five with one walk in 3 2/3 innings.

What to know about McCambley:

McCambley is set to make his MLB debut with the Reds.

McCambley, who turned 27 years old in May, has reached the big-leagues for the first time in his career.

In December 2025, the Philadelphia Phillies selected McCambley in the Rule 5 draft. In March, McCambley was returned to the Marlins.

McCambley posted a 2.36 ERA in 26 2/3 innings for the Triple-A Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, with 32 strikeouts and 17 walks.

He made two starts for Jacksonville, in addition to 11 relief appearances.

McCambley was drafted by the Marlins in 2020.

McCambley was selected in the third round in 2020, 10 picks before the San Francisco Giants selected current Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Kyle Harrison.

The Reds’ first-round pick in the 2020 MLB Draft was Austin Hendrick, McCambley’s teammate in Louisville last week.

McCambley pitched at Coastal Carolina University.

McCambley pitched parts of three seasons for the Chanticleers, from 2018 to 2020.

In four starts as a junior, McCambley posted a 3.24 ERA, striking out 32 and walking seven while allowing two home runs over 25 innings.

As a sophomore, the 6-foot-2, 225-pound right-hander posted a 5.21 ERA, making 11 starts and 11 relief appearances.

McCambley impressed in the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2019.

In 20 2/3 innings pitched over five starts for the Cotuit Kettleers, McCambley posted a 1.74 ERA and 1.065 WHIP.

He struck out 24 and walked seven, and did not allow a home run.

McCambley starred at Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountain East High School.

As a high school senior, McCambley was 6-1 with a 1.70 ERA, a 1.06 WHIP, and 90 strikeouts in 53 2/3 innings.

He also batted .306, with a .955 OPS.

McCambley was a two-time first-team all-Eastern Pennsylvania Conference selection.
