CANTON – A mosquito sample from the city has tested positive for West Nile virus.
As part of annual surveillance and reduction program, the department collects samples and sends them to the Ohio Department of Health Laboratory for virus testing.
The positive sample was collected in the area of Lesh Avenue NE and Richmond Avenue NE, according to a news release from the Canton City Public Health Department.
The department reports there have been no human cases of West Nile viruses identified in Canton this year, however, the risk of human transmission has increased recently as frequent storms and warm temperatures create ideal mosquito breeding conditions.
The city will be spraying for mosquitoes from June 15 to 25 from 9 p.m. to midnight.
