Scattered showers and storms will persist into the weekend, while warm and humid conditions are expected to continue through Sunday, June 29.
Scattered thunderstorms are expected on Friday, June 27, during the afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington. A few storms will be capable of producing damaging wind gusts. Heavy downpours from a few of the storms may result in localized flooding.
A heat advisory also remains in effect until 8 p.m. Friday, due to high temperatures in the upper 80s and lower 90s and heat indices near 100. Excessive heat and humidity could lead to an increase in heat-related illnesses, such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion.
A cold front will move across northern counties overnight into the morning of Saturday, June 28, bringing more showers and a few storms, mostly along and northwest of I-71. Thunderstorms will continue to develop throughout the day in areas southeast of I-71. Saturday’s highs will be in the mid- to upper 80s.
Heat index values are expected to stay under heat advisory criteria this weekend, but temperatures will still be very hot with highs in the upper 80s to lower 90s on Sunday.
An increased chance of thunderstorms will occur during the afternoon and evening hours on June 29. Isolated flooding cannot be ruled out.
Severe thunderstorms will be possible on Monday, June 30. Damaging winds are expected to be the primary threat. Dry weather will return by Tuesday, July 1, and cooler temperatures are expected on Wednesday, June 2, with highs in the low to mid-80s.
How to stay safe during a heat advisory
The region is under a heat advisory until 8 p.m. Friday. People are urged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
Try to limit outside activities to the cooler times − early morning or later in the evening. Wear loose-fitting and lightweight clothing and be alert to signs of heat illness, per the NWS.
