Vote: Who are the Akron-Area High School Athletes of the Week for Feb. 17-23?

It’s time to take a look at the standout high school performers from the Akron area for last week.

Your vote will determine who will be the Akron-Area High School Athlete of the Week for Feb. 17-23. We will pick one girl and one boy. Each athlete’s credentials are listed above the poll — which will be live until 5 p.m. Thursday. The winners will be announced Friday morning on BeaconJournal.com.

Now, let’s meet the candidates.

Here’s a look at the girls nominees, in alphabetical order:

Kasey Bolyard, Mogadore basketball

Scored 19 points to lead Mogadore past Maplewood in a Division VII district final.

Rylee Jackson, Hoban swimming

Was a Division I B finalist in both the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyles.

Evelyn McKnight, Copley basketball

Scored 25 points to lift Copley to a 47-29 win over Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin in a Division III, Northeast 3 district semifinal.

Anne Ruble, North wrestling

Won a second consecutive sectional championship at 235 pounds.

Joi Williams, CVCA basketball

Set a school record for career points (1,764) and logged 35 points, eight rebounds and five assists to push CVCA to a 55-37 win over Ellet to win the Division III, Northeast 4 district title.

Here’s a look at the boys nominees, in alphabetical order:

Desmond Childers, Copley wrestling

Won three matches, all by bonus points and two by technical fall, to win the Northwest sectional title at 132 pounds.

Brayton Feister, Hoban wrestling

Pinned his way to a St. Vincent-St. Mary sectional title at 215 pounds. Of the three pins, none reached the third period and the longest match lasted 3:43.

Brydon Feister, Hoban wrestling

Pinned his way to a St. Vincent-St. Mary sectional title at 190 pounds. The three pins lasted a combined 1:52, and no match took longer than 50 seconds.

George Marshall, St. Vincent-St. Mary swimming

Placed eighth in Division II in the 500-yard freestyle.

Caleb Smesko, Walsh Jesuit swimming

Placed second in the Division I B final in in the 100-yard backstroke.
