UPMC expected to take over Twin City Medical Center, other facilities

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) is expected to take over ownership of Trinity Health System and its facilities across southeast Ohio, including Dennison’s Twin City Medical Center.

UPMC and CommonSpirit Health signed a definitive agreement on May 4. The deal should close sometime in fall 2026, according to a community announcement from UPMC. The two had been in negotiations for the last several months.

UPMC’s acquisition of Trinity Health will also include St. Clairsville’s Neighborhood Hospital and Belmont Medical Plaza, Steubenville’s Trinity Center East and West campuses, Wintersville’s Trinity ExpressCare, and Cadiz’s Express Clinic.

Trinity’s history

The Twin City Medical Center, also know as Trinity Hospital Twin City, is a 25-bed hospital that opened in 1912 as Twin City Hospital.

The hospital came about as a group of volunteer women began raising money to build a hospital, and Reverend Moody “sold” the committee the land for $1, according to the hospital’s website.

In May 2011, thanks to the sponsorship of the Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania, Ohio, it became Trinity Hospital Twin City. Then on Nov. 1, 2014, the hospital’s sponsorship was transferred from the Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania, Ohio, to Catholic Health Initiatives.
