Zach Schering came up with a solid effort for the Clarion University (Pennsylvania) men’s swim team at West Virginia’s Mountaineer Diving Invitational.
Schering, a Jackson High School graduate, and the Division II Golden Eagles competed against three Division I colleges on Nov. 20-23 in Morgantown. Clarion won the final-day team event and Schering picked up 58.50 points with an Inward 2½ Summersault Pike off the 3-meter board.
Schering also finished third in the 1-meter with 294.45 points on six dives and was sixth in the 3-meter with 294.45 points, also on six dives.
He didn’t compete last year but earned four Division II All-America honors in his first three seasons with the team.
Jessica Ickes (Lake Center Christian )
The 6-foot-1 senior middle hitter helped the Indiana Wesleyan University women’s volleyball team win the NAIA Women’s Volleyball National Championship on Dec. 9. It was the program’s third consecutive title. Ickes helped end the match on a block along with teammate Shae Williams in the fourth and final set. Ickes had two kills, two digs, an assist and combined on three blocks during the match. The former two-time county player of the year spent the last two seasons at Indiana Wesleyan after starting her career at Lake Erie College. She finished her college career with 406 kills and 283 blocks. This past season, Ickes was honorable mention All-Crossroads League, in addition to earning Defender of the Week honors during the conference season.
Breezie Williams (GlenOak)
The 5-8 senior guard is the leading scorer on the Wright State women’s basketball team (5-6 overall, 1-1 Horizon League). She’s averaging 12.4 points and 3.8 rebounds, leads the team with 27 steals and is third with 26 assists. Williams had a career-high 27 points in an 85-80 victory at Tennessee State on Nov. 7. She also had a 10-rebound game against Purdue Fort Wayne on Dec. 7.
Will Aljancic (Louisville)
The 6-6, 225-pound junior forward is coming off the bench for the Holy Cross men’s basketball team (5-6). Aljancic scored 14 points in 15 minutes in a 69-47 win over Regis on Dec. 9. He’s averaging 6.3 points, and scored 12 points in a 79-66 loss to Sacred Heart. He’s a transfer from Division II Findlay, where he scored 613 points in 54 games.
Sophie Baker (Perry)
The versatile freshman was the leading point scorer for the St. Bonaventure women’s swim team, which finished fifth out of nine teams at Magnus Cup on Nov. 20-22 in Cleveland. Baker finished third in the 50 backstroke (25.21) and the 100 backstroke (55.78) and was fifth in the 50 butterfly (24.97). She also picked up points in the 50 freestyle (23.39), 100 freestyle (51.53) and 100 butterfly (56.88).
Megan Campbell (Jackson)
The 5-9 sophomore guard is the leading scorer for the Tiffin women’s basketball team (4-4, 0-2 Great Midwest Athletic Conference). Campbell had 15 points and five rebounds Dec. 9 in a 78-66 G-MAC loss to Wayne State. She is averaging 15.0 points and 3.9 rebounds and has a team-high 34 assists. She scored a career-high 26 points in an 85-82 victory over Lake Superior State on Nov. 20.
Grace Craig (Hoover)
The 6-2 junior center has started all seven games for the Rollins (Fla.) women’s basketball team (4-3, 0-3 Sunshine State Conference). Craig is averaging 9.3 points and is second in rebounding with a 6.6 average. She has 20 assists and leads the team in blocked shots with 12. She had 16 points and nine rebounds in a 63-58 loss to Lynn on Nov. 22.
Mitch Finefrock (Jackson)
The 6-2 freshman guard is the outside shooting threat for the Frostburg State (Md.) men’s basketball team (3-5, 1-2 Mountain East Conference). He has connected on 25 of 62 3-point attempts (40.3%). He made 7 of 14 3s in scoring a season-high 28 points in a 109-95 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan on Dec. 3. Finefrock has also chipped in eight assists and eight steals through eight games.
Sophia Gregory (West Branch)
The 6-0 sophomore forward has started all nine games for the Youngstown State women’s basketball team (6-3, 1-1 Horizon League). Gregory averages 9.7 points and leads the team in rebounding (7.8). She has had two big games thus far. She had 31 points and 10 rebounds in a 65-58 victory over North Dakota on Nov. 7 and 24 points and 10 rebounds in a 90-63 win over Akron on Nov. 30.
Jenna Slates (Green)
The 6-0 freshman is starting for the Ashland women’s basketball team (5-3, 1-1 G-MAC). Slates had 14 points and 12 rebounds in a 78-74 loss to Northwood on Dec. 6. It was her fourth double-double, all of them coming in the last four games. She is third on the team in scoring with a 12.6 average and leads Ashland with 11.5 rebounds a game.
Brooke Haren (Louisville)
The 5-9 sophomore guard has started all seven games for the Ursuline basketball team (2-5, 0-1 G-MAC). Haren had eight points and a game-high 14 rebounds in a 82-78 loss to Roberts Wesleyan on Dec. 6. She’s averaging 12.3 points and 8.3 rebounds. She had 24 points and 11 rebounds in a 90-47 victory over Bryant & Stratton on Nov. 22.
Laina Swartzwelder (Green)
The freshman was a member of three strong relays that led the Rochester Tech women’s swim team to a second-place finish out of six teams at the Don Richards Invitational on Dec. 6 in Rochester, N.Y. Swartzwelder helped the 400 medley finish first (3:57.31), the 400 free finish tied for first (3:36.74) and the 200 free finish second (1:38.56). She also picked up points for finishing fourth in the 100 free (53.84).
