Registration open for 5K trail run-walk  

ZOAR –TuscParks and Canal Tavern of Zoar are partnering to host the 5K trail run-walk on Oct. 19. The race will start at 1 p.m. and take place along the towpath from Fort Laurens Museum to the Canal Lands Park trailhead. All proceeds will benefit the general upkeep of the present Towpath trail and its surrounding features in Tuscarawas County.

The racing fee is $40. Those registered before Sept. 19 will receive a T-shirt. Registrations will be accepted on the day of the race at a tent located between the Canal Lands Park trailhead and the Canal Tavern of Zoar from 11:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. A free shuttle will transport runners (12:15 and 12:30 p.m.) to the starting line at Fort Laurens. Awards and the door prizes will distributed at the Canal Tavern of Zoar, where participants will be treated to an Octoberfest-style party with free bratwurst, beer, and music on the patio.

Inclusive playground donation

DOVER −The Tuscarawas Society for Children & Adults recently committed $125,000 toward the ground surface installation at the new inclusive playground project at Tuscora Park. The organization, better known as the Rainbow Connection, was able to assist with this project thanks in part to an American Electric Power Foundation grant received in December 2024. The AEP Foundation awards grants to organizations and projects that provide a benefit to communities within their service territories.

The Tuscora Park Foundation has raised $376,000 of the $460,000 needed to complete the project. Donations toward the playground can be made to the Tuscora Park Foundation, 161 Tuscora Ave. NW, New Philadelphia, OH 44663 or at tuscoraparkfoundation.com.

St. Timothy’s to host free festival

MASSILLION − St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church will host a free parish festival from noon to 3 p.m. Sept, 13, with games, contests and food in its parking lot.

The parish will also host a spaghetti dinner from 5 to 6 p.m. Sept. 18 and the Blessing of the Animals at 1 p.m. Oct. 5.

Upcoming library programs

● Touch a Truck is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 13, at the Dover Library. Among the vehicles on-site will be those from the Dover fire and police departments and vehicles from Rosenberry Towing and Smith Concrete. Free hot dogs and drinks will be offered. The library will have goody bags for the kids while supplies last.

● A carnival will be held at the Strasburg Branch at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 11. Train rides will be provided by the Tuslaw Lions Club. Registration is required.

● Dr. John D. Idoine III, an orthopaedic surgeon at Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital, will present two programs about knee pain and shoulder pain at the Dover Library. The first program will be held on Sept. 17, and the second on Sept. 23. He will discuss the causes of knee pain, how a diagnosis is determined and decisions on when to treat conservatively. He will also share the newest advancements in surgical care.

● The Tuscarawas Valley Civil War Round Table will meet at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 11, at the Dover Library, where John CSpaziani will present “The Hunley: The Rest of the Story.”

● The Tuscarawas County Democratic Executive Committee will hold its quarterly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 9, at the Tuscarawas County Democratic Headquarters.

● The Claymont City Schools Board will meet at 6 p.m. Sept. 8, at the administration office.

● The Tuscarawas County Public Defender Board will meet at 5 p.m. Sept. 8, at 203 Fair Avenue, N.E., New Philadelphia.

Fishing tournament sets record 

SCIO − The Scio American Legion Post 482, in partnership with Scio Sportsman’s Club and Williams Energy, conducted its annual Children’s Fishing Tournament on July 26 at the Legion’s pond with a record-setting attendance. 

More than 191 children registered for the fishing tournament and were awarded a new fishing pole, small tackle box, T-shirt, as well as more than 15 new bikes awarded to the most inches of fish caught. A family fishing charter, sponsored by the Tom Mack family, was awarded to the most inches caught by a boy and girl.
