Blame Canada
Trump threatened Canada with tariffs unless its leaders control the dangerous wildfire smoke that has come over our northern border. Ohio senator Bernie Moreno wants to sanction Canada and certain Canadian officials for allowing smoke to cross the border. Those things will be about as much help as sending Homeland Security to the border to arrest the air currents.
Is there a reason we haven’t offered Canada vast numbers of Department of Homeland Security and National Guard members to work on the fire lines? When cities are basically shut down because of dangerous air quality, doesn’t that qualify as a national emergency?
Shouldn’t our leaders do more than make threats?

Pay attention to who they vote for, ladies
Re: “Politics make dating nearly impossible. We must be able to find middle ground,” July 13: I’ve read recent letters from men who support Donald Trump expressing frustration that some women won’t date them or pursue friendships because of their political views. They point to what they see as the accomplishments of his administration and argue that their vote shouldn’t matter to women who disagree with them.
What they overlook is why many women reject Trump: his long, well-documented pattern of demeaning women. This includes multiple accusations of sexual misconduct, a civil court finding that he sexually abused E. Jean Carroll, his own recorded comments about grabbing women without consent, reports that he entered teenage pageant dressing rooms uninvited and his repeated sexist insults toward women.
People can disagree about policies and still respect one another. But character is different.
The values a person supports – and the behavior they are willing to overlook – can reveal a great deal about how they view and treat others.
I tell my 23-year-old daughters to pay attention to how a potential partner votes.
Choosing a partner – or deciding which leaders to support – is about more than preference or shared interests; it reflects the values we want represented in our lives and communities. For many women, that includes respect, compassion and how others are treated publicly and privately.
