APPLE CREEK — Three people were injured on June 15 at the Wayne County Speedway when a sprint car left the racing surface.
According to the Apple Creek/East Union Township Fire Department, the spectators were struck within the infield area of the track. The incident occurred during the Ohio Sprint Speed Week at the speedway.
Two of the patients suffered critical injuries and required advanced medical care. One of the critically injured patients was transported by Apple Creek Fire Department, while a second critically injured patient was airlifted from the scene by MedFlight.
The third person sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by the Orrville Fire Department, which responded to provide mutual aid assistance, according to a news release.
“We would like to recognize the outstanding teamwork and professionalism demonstrated by all agencies and personnel involved in the response. The quick actions of the Wayne County Speedway staff, along with the EMS personnel providing event standby coverage, were instrumental in ensuring immediate patient care and scene management,” said the release from Brent Carr, the fire department’s Public Information Officer.
The release went on to extend appreciation to the EMS crew from Orrville Fire Department, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, MedFlight, and the dispatchers at the Wayne County Justice Center.
“Out of respect for the patients and their families, no additional information regarding their identities or medical conditions will be released at this time,” the release states.
