The last real tournament test for many wrestlers will took place Jan. 31 and Brecksville and Highland. took home team titles in the National and American Conferences, respectively at the Suburban League Tournament.
Caden Peterson (Aurora, 106 pounds), Gaspar Raymundo (Barberton, 113), Brandon Bickerton (Highland, 120), Austin Bickerton (Highland, 126), Kyle Scavuzzo (Highland, 132), Blake Frantz (Wadsworth, 138), Cole Speer (Brecksville, 144), Brennan Kicker (Highland, 150), Kyle Jardine (Wadsworth, 157), Zack Aquila (Brecksville, 165), Drake Brasiel (Aurora, 175), Nik Kofinas (North Royalton, 190), EJ German (Brecksville, 215) and Jacob Earnest (Wadsworth, 285) won individual titles.

Jacob Earnest wins 285-pound Suburban League Tournament title
285: Jacob Earnest (Wadsworth) t.f. Cole Ditzig (Brecksville), 20-4
Earnest with two takedowns in the first period to one escape from Ditzig. It’s 6-1 to start the second.
Earnest takes down and reverses Ditzig in 56 seconds. Earnest kicks Ditzik and takes him down to go up nine. Earnest with a takedown with 47 seconds left. He kicks him again and get the final takedown with 15 seconds left.
EJ German wins 215-pound Suburban League Tournament title
EJ German (Brecksville) d. Jackson Phillips (Barberton), 8-3
German with a takedown to Phillips’ back. Phillips reverses, German escapes. It’s 8-2 German after one. German chooses neutral to start the second. Not much happens and the score stays 8-2.
Phillips chooses down and German stands him up to start the third.
Nick Kofinas wins 190-pound Suburban League Tournament title
Nik Kofinas (North Royalton) m.d. Lukas Grillis (Highland), 11-0
Grillis chooses bottom after a scoreless first period and is turned twice to make it 8-0 Kofinas heading into the third period. Kofinas with a takedown in the final 30 seconds.
Drake Brasiel wins 175-pound Suburban League Tournament title
175: Drake Brasiel (Aurora) m.d. Ian Bee (Tallmadge), 11-2
Basically a feeling out period between both wrestlers. It’s scoreless after one. Brasiel takes down and is out in four seconds. Brasiel with a takedown 47 seconds in. He got close to backs once but it goes to the third period 4-0 Brasiel.
Bee chooses down to start the third period. He’s in with a half and gets five backs and a penalty point makes it 10-0. Bee reverses Brasiel. Brasiel escapes.
Zack Aquila wins 165-pound Suburban League Tournament title
Zack Aquila (Brecksville) d. Niko Giatis (Highland), 4-1, OT
Both wrestlers had shots thwarted in the first 60 seconds. Aquila with a solid shot near the edge of the mat that get stalemated. It’s scoreless after one.
Giatis chooses down to start the second. He escapes with 49 seconds left. Aquila with a shot on the same right side of the mat that goes out of bounds. It’s 1-0 Giatis after two.
Aquila chooses down. Aquila is out in 17 seconds to tie it up. We’re headed to overtime tied at one.
Aquila with a takedown 35 seconds left in overtime to win.
Kyle Jardine wins 157-pound Suburban League Tournament title
Kyle Jardine (Wadsworth) m.d. Michael Kennedy (Aurora), 10-2
Jardine with a takedown in the first 40 seconds. He kicks Kennedy and then takes him down at the one-minute mark. It’s 6-1 Jardine after one.
Jardine takes down and escapes in 11 seconds. Jardine with the takedown at 1:11. Kennedy escapes. It’s 10-2 after two.
Kennedy takes bottom to start the third but is ridden out.
Brennan Kicker wins 150-pound Suburban League Tournament title
150: Brennan Kicker (Highland) t.f. Jack Cutlip (Hudson), 15-0
Kicker with a takedown 65 seconds into the first period. He picks up four back points with 15 seconds left and it’s 7-0 after the first period.
Kicker takes down to start the second period and escapes in four seconds. He then takes down Cutlip and puts him on his back to end things with 1:12 left in the second period.
Cole Speer wins 144-pound Suburban League Tournament title
Cole Speer (Brecksville) d. Kolten Mellon (Wadsworth), 1-0
Mellon in deep on a shot early but Speer fends it off and it’s scoreless after a minute. It’s scoreless to start the second.
Mellon chooses down but Speer rides him out. Speer takes down to start the third and escapes with 1:02 left.
Blake Frantz wins 138-pound Suburban League Tournament title
138: Blake Frantz (Wadsworth) d. Desmond Childers (Copley), 7-3
Frantz with a takedown 46 seconds in. Childers escapes. It’s 3-1 Frantz after one.
Childers takes down to start the second and escapes in the first 10 seconds. Frantz with a takedown 34 seconds into the second period. Frantz kicks Childers at the one-minute mark. It’s 6-3 Frantz heading into the third period.
Frantz chooses down to start the third and is out in seven seconds.
Kyle Scavuzzo wins 132-pound Suburban League Tournament title
132: Lucas Schulz (Brecksville) t.f. vs. Kyle Scavuzzo (Highland), 17-2
Scavuzzo takes Schulz down to his back to grab a 7-0 lead after one. He escapes quick to start the second and takes Schulz down with 16 seconds left to grab an 11-0 lead after two periods.
Schulz takes down to start the third and escapes 17 seconds in. Scavuzzo with the takedown 44 seconds in. It’s 14-1 after two.
Schulz is down to start the third and escapes. Scavuzzo with the technical fall four seconds before the end of the third period.
Austin Bickerton wins 126-pound Suburban League Tournament title

Bickerton with a takedown 30 seconds in. Turba escapes but his taken down almost immediately. Turba escapes and is taken down again. Bickerton leads 11-2 after one.
Bickerton chooses down and escapes in 10 seconds. Bickerton takes down Turba and kicks him with 1:11 left in the second period. Bickerton catches Turba and wins with 55 seconds left in the second period.
Brandon Bickerton wins 120-pound Suburban League Tournament title

Bickerton takes Cotleur to his back for a 7-0 lead after one. He escapes to start the second. Another takedown to Cotleur’s back and a pin with 54 seconds left in the second period.
Gaspar Raymundo wins 113-pound Suburban League Tournament title

Raymondo puts Pylypiak to his back immediately for a seven-point. Pylypiak escapes. It’s 7-1 Raymondo after one. Pylypiak chooses bottom to start the second and gets ridden out. Raymondo picks up the pin with 31 seconds left.
Caden Peterson wins 106-pound Suburban League Tournament title

Dougherty with a takedown 20 seconds in. Peterson reverses with 56 seconds left in the first period and gets four back points. Peterson is ahead 6-3 after the first period. Neutral start.

What teams will be at the Suburban League Tournament?
While all 16 teams will make up the brackets, two titles are on the line.
The National Conference pits reigning champion Brecksville against Wadsworth, Solon, Stow, Hudson, Twinsburg, Nordonia and North Royalton.
The American Conference pits reigning champion Highland against Cuyahoga Falls, Barberton, Tallmadge, Revere, Aurora, Kent Roosevelt and Copley.
What does the Suburban League field look like?
This season’s 16-team event has two projected state champions (Zack Aquila, Brecksville, 165; Brandon Bickerton, Highland, 120), 15 projected state placers and 31 projected state qualifiers in the field.
