Officers, friends, family and city leaders convened in Clifton for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to rename a street in honor of a deputy killed in May 2025.
The event was held in the afternoon of May 20 at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Burnet Woods Drive near the University of Cincinnati’s campus.
The street, Deputy Larry Henderson Jr. Way, is named after the retired Hamilton County deputy who was struck and killed by a vehicle while directing traffic during the University of Cincinnati’s spring graduation.
Rodney Hinton Jr., the suspect in Henderson’s death, is charged with aggravated murder and faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole. The incident happened hours after Hinton and his family met with Cincinnati police to review body camera video of his 18-year-old son, Ryan Hinton, being fatally shot by an officer.
University police also unveiled a plaque honoring the deputy earlier in the day at Edwards Three Center on Corry Boulevard.
‘He was doing what he loved’
Kym Trenkamp, who grew up across the street from Henderson and went to high school with him and his sister, told Enquirer media partner Fox19 that he loved what he did.
“He was doing what he loved—being out with the people, helping his teammates take care of what needed to be done. To be taken from us that quickly… it’s absolutely devastating and tragic,” Trenkamp said.
Trenkamp said she remembers Henderson from his service and his drive to help others.
“How many retired guys are going to do that? That’s who Larry was—he always wanted to help and could never say no to anyone,” she said.
