Sean Kavanagh had a standout sophomore season for the SUNY Cortland men’s lacrosse team, but he is on his way to an even bigger season this spring.
The 6-foot, 185-pound junior from North Canton Hoover High School leads the New York-based Red Dragons with 51 points on 26 goals and 25 assists.
As a freshman he finished with 48 goals and 31 assists for 79 points with four game winners and was named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association All-American second team and was a first-team pick in both the USILA All-Region team and the State University of New York Athletic Conference.
Kavanagh has scored at least one point in his 10 starts and had six goals and three assists in a 24-7 victory over Brockport, four goals and three assists in a 19-7 triumph over Nazareth and five goals in a 17-5 win over Scranton.
Cortland is 5-5 overall and 1-0 in SUNYAC play after a 32-2 conference victory over SUNY Canton on Saturday, March 28. Kavanagh had three goals and three assists in the game.
Kyle Smith (Green)
The sophomore and freshman teammate Sam Fauver of Hudson shared Big East Conference Golfer of the Week honors on March 26 after sharing medalist honors for the Xavier men’s team at the Keene Trace Collegiate on March 24 in Nicholasville, Ky. They both shot 144 for 36 holes with Smith posting a 2-under-par 70 and a 72. He tied for 31st at the Seahawk Invitational, March 30-31, in Wilmington, N.C. with a 4-over 220 total for 54 holes.
Matty Benson (Louisville)
The sophomore infielder is having a standout season for the Maryland softball team (13-20, 1-11 Big Ten). Benson is hitting .324 (23-for-71) with four doubles, four home runs, 16 runs and 18 RBIs. She had her biggest game of the season when she went 4-for-6 with two home runs — including a game-winning grand slam — in an 11-8 non-league victory over George Washington on March 18.
Kylie Gorsuch (Green)
The junior catcher got off to a big start with the Ohio University softball team (22-12, 5-4 Mid-American Conference). Gorsuch is hitting .342 (27-for-79) with six doubles, six home runs, 23 runs and 25 RBIs. She hit two home runs and had four RBIs in a 10-6 MAC victory over Toledo on March 15. She has made just one error on 101 chances (.990).
Anna Kloehn (Jackson)
The 5-foot-4 senior attack has started all seven games for the Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) women’s lacrosse team (3-4, 1-2 Presidents’ Athletic Conference). Kloehn scored a goal in a 13-10 PAC loss to Chatham on March 28. She has 14 goals and three assists along with 10 ground balls and eight draw controls. She had three goals and two assists in a 19-0 victory over Thiel on March 25.
Sadie Carroll (Hoover)
The 5-7 sophomore infielder had five hits in seven at-bats with three runs and three RBIs as the Gannon (Pa.) softball team topped Pitt-Johnstown 8-2 and 13-0 in a PSAC West doubleheader on Sunday, March 29 to help the Golden Knights go to 10-10 overall and 5-3 in conference play. Carroll is batting .378 (17-for-45) with two doubles, 10 runs and eight RBIs.
Jacob Harrelson (Green)
The 6-2 freshman right-hander is off to a big start with the Westminster (Pa.) baseball team. He’s 3-0 with a 2.00 earned run average in seven games with four starts. In 27 innings, he has given up 26 hits and six runs, all earned, with 10 walks and 27 strikeouts. He tossed a seven-inning complete game in a 7-6 win over Grove City on March 24. The Titans are 15-5 overall and in a three-way tie for first in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference with a 6-0 record.
Carley Stalder (Jackson)
The first-year student became the second gymnast in Ball State history to be named Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year after helping the Cardinals finish second out of seven teams at the MAC championship meet on March 21. Stalder was tied for fourth in floor exercise (9.875), tied for ninth in balance beam (9.800) and tied for 10th in vault (9.800).
Garret Odey (Alliance)
The redshirt junior, a right-handed pitcher, is the closer for the Earlham (Ind.) baseball team (11-8, 6-1 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference). Odey is 1-0 with three saves to help the team sit tied for first in the conference. His win came in a 15-5 victory over Franklin on Saturday, March 28. He has come out of the bullpen in eight games and in 13.1 innings, he has given up 19 hits and eight runs, seven earned, with five walks and 10 strikeouts.
Kate Slutz (West Branch)
The Baldwin Wallace women’s tennis team opened the spring season with a 4-0 record, and the sophomore went unbeaten in the matches. Slutz was 4-0 at No. 5 singles and 4-0 at No. 3 doubles along with fellow sophomore Sarah Sayyed of Westlake. The Yellow Jackets are 8-2 for the fall-spring season and Slutz is 7-4 in singles, including tournament play, and 5-2 in doubles with three different partners.
