Roundup: Licking County athletes win two more district track titles

A foursome for the Granville boys track team was among those to punch their ticket to the regional championships on May 20.

The foursome of Benjamin Rose, Connor Boissey, Sebastian Rodgers and Callum Sproul crossed in a time of 8 minutes, 13.31 seconds to win the 3,200-meter relay during the Division II, District 2 championships at Hilliard Darby.

Granville’s Logan Miller added a runner-up finish in the 3,200 (9:46.30) and Boissey a fourth-place finish in the event (9:53.81) to also qualify for next week’s regional meet at Lexington.

In the girls meet, Granville’s Elsa Tonnessen placed third in the 3,200 (11:20.72). Teammates Kenzie Hadley, Sadie Tritico, Claire Weaver and Lily Kronk added a fourth-place finish in the 3,200 relay (10:18.50).

White wins shot

Hunter White covered a distance of 48 feet, 6 inches to win the shot put for the Licking Valley boys during the Division III district meet at Hilliard Darby.

Valley’s Levi Lewis added a third-place finish in the long jump (20-3) to also qualify for next week’s regional meet at Muskingum University.

In the girls meet, Heath’s Marley Morris took runner-up in the shot put (36-3), and teammate Lyla Bailey added a fourth-place finish in the event (34-9½). Third-place finishers were Johnstown’s Ava Ruffle in the long jump (15-5¼), Lakewood’s Jaylie Maas in the high jump (4-9) and Valley’s Allison Osborn in the discus (111-7).

Anderson advances

Lily Anderson cleared 4 feet, 6 inches to tie for second in the high jump for the Newark Catholic girls during the Division V district meet at Granville.

Anderson qualified for next week’s regional meet at Cuyahoga Heights.

BOYS LACROSSE

Johnstown battles Bexley

Will Taylor totaled two goals and two assists for No. 7 Johnstown in a 19-7 loss at No. 2 Bexley (16-2) in a Division II second-round match.

Hayden Norman added two goals, Warren Miller a goal and an assist, Gabe Schneider and Jason Hettinger a goal apiece and Logan Brown two assists for the Johnnies (10-8), who were fresh off their first postseason win in program history, beating Dayton Carroll 18-5 on May 14. Ben Smith made 14 saves, and Matthew Baisden picked up seven ground balls.

BASEBALL

Lakewood rallies on road

Carson Pound, Gavin Kessler and Jalen White each hit RBI singles to highlight a five-run top of the sixth inning as Lakewood shot past host Fairfield Union for a 5-4 victory.

Pound, White and Evan Moore led the Lancers (9-16) with two hits each, and Garrett Hardway and Carter Davis added a hit and a run apiece. Moore also struck out two in three two-hit scoreless innings, and Davis struck out six and allowed one hit and one run in four innings of relief.
