PITTSBURGH — The Cincinnati Reds and Pirates were locked in a one-run game in the eighth inning when rain intensified and caused a rain delay Sunday, June 28.
UPDATE: After almost 45 minutes, the grounds crew pulled the tarp off the field, and then the game eventually resumed at 5:19 p.m. (EDT), the delay officially lasting 1 hour, 5 minutes.
Reds manager Terry Francona called for a pitching change to bring Pierce Johnson into the game, replacing Brock Burke, with one out and nobody on base in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Pirates led 5-4.
But the Pirates did announce that the regular Sunday post-game kids’ running of the bases was canceled, eliciting a hearty chorus of boos.
The Reds, who won the first two games of the series, fell behind early when the Pirates banged out four straight hits off Brady Singer to open the second, including a three-run homer by former Red Tyler Callihan to cap the four-run sequence.
The Reds tied it with a two-run single by JJ Bleday in the fourth and RBI hits by Tyler Stephenson and Edwin Arroyo in the fifth.
Ryan O’Hearn untied it in the fifth with a long homer to right off singer.
The middle game of the series also was delayed 36 minutes by rain.
