Make sure the a/c is in working order: Heat wave washing northern Ohio

Greater Akron area residents may need to adopt multiple strategies for beating the heat over the next week, as temperatures are expected to reach the mid-90s for several days, with the heat index potentially exceeding 100 degrees.

According to a Nixle alert, the area is under a heat advisory from noon Tuesday until 8 p.m. Thursday. Heat indexes of up to 104 degrees can be seen throughout much of northern Ohio. The high temperatures could cause heat-related illnesses.

The first crest of the heat wave is expected Monday, with highs expected to be around 88 degrees and sunny, and a low around 73 degrees, according to AccuWeather. Tuesday’s high is expected to climb to around 94 degrees, with a low of 74 degrees.

Wednesday’s high expected temperature of 98 degrees could set a heat record: according to AccuWeather, the record, set in 1931, was 97 degrees. Thursday will be similar, with a high of around 96 degrees and a low of 74 degrees.

According to AccuWeather, temperatures will start to fall gradually over the Independence Day holiday, with Friday’s high temperature around 92 degrees and low around 71 degrees. On Saturday, a high of 90 degrees and a low of 71 degrees is expected and Sunday a high of 89 degrees and low of a 69 degrees is expected.

Akron activates cooling center Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday

Akron will extend hours at Summit Lake Community Center, 380 W. Crosier St., on Tuesday, June 30, Wednesday, July 1, and Thursday, July 2 to provide a cooling center for residents in need.  Summit Lake Community Center will be open between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. those days. All other city of Akron community centers will be open during their normal business hours. The city will continue to monitor temperatures and will extend community center hours as necessary.

Hudson will collect trash early starting tomorrow due to predicted heat

Due to the high heat index forecasted between Monday, June 29 and Thursday, July 3, Republic Services will be starting Hudson routes one hour earlier than normal to ensure that picks ups are collected as safely as possible.
