The incident happened around 7:15 a.m. Aug. 15. At least one Newark police officer shot at a person on the 600 block of West Church Street near the Licking County Family YMCA, a Licking County 911 dispatcher confirmed.

The unidentified person was taken to Mount Carmel East hospital, the dispatcher said. No officers were injured.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation into the shooting. As of about 10 a.m., a BCI spokesperson said he did not have an update on the shooting victim’s condition.

As of 10:45 a.m., authorities still had an overflow parking lot blocked off behind the YMCA’s main building. By 1 p.m., the scene was mostly clear, save for a damaged maroon sedan that investigators were photographing.

Just before 1:30 p.m., a tow truck entered the parking lot, and police began removing the yellow tape about five minutes later.

In a statement posted on its Facebook page, the YMCA said: “We want to take a moment to acknowledge the recent incident that occurred on our campus. We understand the news can be concerning, and we want to reassure you that the safety of our members, staff, and community remains our highest priority.

“The Main Building and Mitchell Center are OPEN today, August 15th. The Outdoor Pool will be CLOSED today and will reopen tomorrow. We are in contact with local law enforcement to ensure our facility remains a safe and welcoming space for all!”

Additional details were not immediately available.
