OHSAA boys basketball tournament scores, Hoban knocks off Garfield Heights

MEDINA — The high school boys basketball season has reached the regional bracket.

Archbishop Hoban made sure its season will extend to at least the Elite Eight by knocking off Garfield Heights in a Division III, Region 9 semifinal Tuesday, March 10 at Medina High School.

Hoban returns to Medina to play in a regional final at 7 p.m. Friday, March 13 against Gates Mills Hawken or Youngstown Chaney. Hawken and Chaney play their regional semifinal at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 11 at Medina.

What to know about the Hoban Knights boys basketball team

Hoban defeated Chagrin Falls Kenston 70-57 in the Division III, Northeast 3 district final on Saturday, March 7 at Cloverleaf.

The Caporaletti twin brothers led Hoban past Kenston. Arri Caporaletti scored 17 points and Nico Caporaletti totaled 15 points, five rebounds and five assists to lead the No. 4 seed Knights (18-7) to a win over the No. 5 Bombers (21-4) at Cloverleaf High School.

The victory gave Hoban its fifth consecutive district title in boys basketball.

Hoban’s Owen Hamilton scored 14 points, Brady Lucey had eight points and John Johnson contributed seven points, eight rebounds and two assists against Kenston.

“We came out with an inspired defensive effort and a relentless desire to get this collective effort,” Hoban coach T.K. Griffith said. “It was a true team effort. The Caporaletti twins and Owen played well. JJ’s defense was solid and Brady’s hustle was impressive.”

The Hoban boys basketball team has won two state championships, the 1989 title in Division III and the 2023 crown in Division I. The Knights were also a Division II state semifinalist in 1998.

Griffith was a reserve player on the 1989 state title team, and coached the 2023 state title and 1998 state semifinalist teams.

What to know about the Garfield Heights Bulldogs boys basketball team

Garfield Heights has ended Hoban’s season in each of the past two years. The Bulldogs topped the Knights 52-43 in a Division I, Region 1 semifinal at the University of Akron’s Rhodes Arena in 2024 and 58-45 in a Division III, Region 9 final at Medina High School in 2025.

Garfield Heights defeated Lyndhurst Brush 70-59 in the Division III, Northeast 1 district final on Saturday, March 7 at Cloverleaf.

Garfield Heights is led by Marcus Johnson, the reigning Mr. Basketball in the state of Ohio and a South Carolina recruit. Johnson is a talented senior guard who helped guide the Bulldogs past the Knights in each of the past two seasons.

His father, Sonny Johnson, is Garfield Heights head coach. The elder Johnson also won Mr. Basketball in the state of Ohio in 1998 before playing collegiately at Cleveland State University and Ohio University.

Garfield Heights has been a state semifinalist in 2025, 2016, 2015, 2011 and 1950.
