Ohio State blows out Grambling in offensive explosion: Highlights, reaction from Week 2

Ohio State looked every bit the No. 1 team in a public flogging of FCS opponent Grambling State on Saturday. The offense scored early and often through the air, then polished most of the game off by scoring multiple times on the ground on the way to a 77-0 victory.

We kept track of all the action during the game and provided some highlights and reactions as things played out. Here’s the stream of action with plenty of highlights, notes, and reaction. There was plenty to talk about and share in this one, and now it’s off to preparing to host Ohio University on Saturday.

Put a cork in this one

And that’s all she wrote. Ohio State wins going away in a 70-0 laugher. All phases of the game looked elite. There will be bigger games coming up when the Buckeyes face more adversity, but it’s going to be hard to find too many things to complain about in this one. OSU now improves to 2-0 and will next take on Ohio University next weekend.

Might as well get another running back a touchdown

Sam Dixon is the latest running back to find the red part of the field. He took a handoff and went 1 yard to give the Buckeyes 70 points on the day. It’s almost over now, and it’s hard to find much to complain about after this one other than the opponent. The Buckeyes lead 70-0 with just 31 seconds to go in the game — mercifully.

It’s clock-killing time y’all

There hasn’t been much going on here as of late. Freshman quarterback Tavion St. Clair is in the game, and the play calling is in kill-the-clock mode. There was a dropped 3rd down pass that could have kept a drive going for the Ohio product, but don’t expect much more than a heavy dose of ground and pound from here on out. The Buckeyes still lead 63-0 with 5:30 left in the game.

Lincoln Kienholz gets his first passing touchdown of the season

Ohio State’s backup quarterback has continued to move the Buckeye offense. It’s been a heavy dose of the running game, but this time the coaching staff dialed up a play action pass from Kienholz to tight end Jelani Thurman on 4th and goal from the 2-yard line for another touchdown. OSU now leads 63-0 with almost a full quarter of play still to go.

The Buckeyes score another TD on the ground

Freshman running back Isaiah West gets into the mix with a touchdown carry, taking a handoff 12 yards for another Buckeye score. Things are definitely out of control now with OSU leading 56-0 with 6:30 left in the 3rd quarter.

Ohio State forces another turnover

Linebacker Riley Pettijohn is going to be a star at some point. He’s been all over the place, coming in as a backup, and just made a great tackle and hit that forced a turnover via fumble recovery. It’s first and ten Ohio State going the other way, looking to score some more points.

Bo knows touchdowns

Freshman running back Bo Jackson has found the end zone to give Ohio State a 49-0 lead, his first TD in the scarlet and gray. His first carry of the day ends in a score after taking it 11 yards to pay dirt. There is still 8:24 left in the 3rd quarter.

Lincoln Kienholz enters the fray

The quarterback competition was a close one between Julian Sayin and Lincoln Kienholz, and we’re about to see what the backup QB can do in live game action. He’s in and ready to make an impression, perhaps.

The Buckeye D forces another punt

The OSU defense is backing up the play from last week with another equally impressive showing so far in this one, and that’s even with some depth players starting to get in the game. Ohio State forces yet another punt and will hand the ball back to the offense with 12:00 left in the 3rd quarter. The Buckeyes still lead 42-0.

The Buckeyes almost get another turnover

Aaron Scott looks to have intercepted the first pass of the second half, but it is reviewed and ruled an incomplete pass. Things are going from crazy to chaotic for Grambling State right now, and not in a good way.

Ohio State scores on special teams via scoop and score

If you have your bingo card in front of you, you can block off something you don’t see every day. Ohio State scored on special teams, but when it kicked off. Grambling fumbles the ball while being tackled, and linebacker Riley Pettijohn picks it up and runs it into the end zone for another Buckeye touchdown. OSU is now up 42-0 with the second half just 25 seconds in.

And that ends the first half

That’s a wrap on the first half. Ohio State has almost 400 yards of offense, and the only mistake is the one pick he threw at the goal line. It’s 35-0 as both teams head to the locker room. Look for the Buckeyes to empty the bench in the second half. Sayin has been on time and on target, completing 18-of-19 passes for 306 yards and four touchdowns. Is his day done? We’ll see.

And Ohio State gets its first score on the ground

The Buckeyes are now focusing on the running game with a heavy dose of CJ Donaldson. He gets it on 3rd down and goal from the 2-yard line and pays it off. Ohio State is now up 35-0 with just 57 seconds left in the first half.

Ohio State is threatening again at the 2:00 timeout

CJ Donaldson takes a good counter scheme handoff and rumbles 27 yards inside the 10-yard line, and Ohio State will have a 1st and goal coming out of the 2:00 timeout.

The Ohio State defense forces another punt

Grambling State had something going, but a dropped pass on 3rd down resulted in a stalled drive. The Ohio State offense will now get the ball back, looking to get into its four-minute offense with just over four minutes left in the half.

Sayin throw an interception to end his perfect day

Just when the Buckeyes were on the doorstep of scoring again, Sayin makes a long throw from the far hash, and the defensive back cuts in front of Carnell Tate to pick it off. It’s Sayin’s first incompletion of the day, and it goes as a turnover. There’s still just under 8:00 left in the half.

Ohio State nabs the first turnover of the game

It’s all going bad for Grambling State. Not only is the defense giving up a ton of yards, but Caleb Downs just picked off a pass for the first turnover of the game, and now Ohio State has a very short field. It’ll be 1st and 10 from the Grambling 21-yard line.

Sayin remains perfect on another touchdown pass

Sayin throws his fourth touchdown on the day and breaks a program record in doing so. He hits Jeremiah Smith on a 9-yard pass for his 15th straight completion to start the game, breaking Will Howard’s record of 14-straight from last season. Ohio State now leads 28-0 with 1:38 left in the first half. The route is on.

And … The Ohio State defense does indeed hold

Just like we saw against Texas in Week 1, the Ohio State defense is able to get a stop when it needs to, and then Grambling misses the 36-yard field goal attempt. OSU gets the ball back on offense, and here we go again. OSU still leads 21-0.

The Grambling offense has a little momentum at the end of the first quarter

Grambling converted a fourth down and is now moving towards the red zone. There’s a little momentum for the offense as the end of the first quarter hits. Ohio State still leads 21-0. It’ll be 2nd and 4 from the OSU 25-yard line when play resumes. We’ll see if the Buckeye defense can buckle down here.

Sayin is dealing today

And, Ohio State gets another touchdown through the air, this time it goes from Sayin to Carnell Tate. The throw was really good, but Tate’s body control and ability to adjust and land in bounds were amazing. It’s now 21-0 Buckeyes with 4:10 left still in the first quarter. Sayin is 10-for-10 for 218 yards and three touchdowns already and the first quarter isn’t even over.

Looks like the passing game is a big part of the game plan today

We mentioned it in some of the pregame coverage we had, but it looks like Ryan Day and Brian Hartline want to get Julian Sayin some confidence after last week. They’ve called for the quarterback to sling it around early on, and you can probably look for more of that.

Jeremiah Smith does Jeremiah Smith things and scores on a long TD

Not sure how Smith got so wide open (hint, at least put the water boy on him), but he catches a pass from Sayin and races 87 yards for a score, and the track meet could be on. It’s now 14-0 Buckeyes with 8:54 left in the first quarter.

The Ohio State defense gets Grambling off the field on its first possession

The Buckeyes gave the Tigers a first down due to an offsides penalty, but then closed the door. Grambling had to punt and gave the ball back to Ohio State inside the Buckeyes’ 15-yard line.

Ohio State doesn’t take long to get on the board

The Buckeyes score on their first drive on a six-play, 83-yard drive. The touchdown comes on 47-yard pass from Julian Sayin to tight end Will Kacmarek, and just like that, it’s 7-0 Ohio State with 12:39 still left in the first quarter.
