Another Ohio State baseball alum is joining the Seattle Mariners.
On July 12, Ohio State catcher Mason Eckelman was selected with the 250th overall pick by the Mariners in the 2026 MLB Draft. The pick, in the eighth round, has an approximate slot value of $220,900, according to MLB Pipeline.
As a junior last season at Ohio State, Eckelman batted .304 with 15 doubles, four triples, eight home runs and 47 RBIs and scored 42 runs. He batted .280 (115 for 410) with 25 doubles, six triples, 13 homers and 81 RBIs in three seasons with the Buckeyes. Eckelman was third-team All-Big Ten in 2026.
He was the second player to be drafted from Walsh Jesuit High School in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, joining Ryan Piech, who was taken at No. 200 overall by the Baltimore Orioles.
Eckelman’s father, Alex, played minor league baseball and is the senior vice president of hitting for the Cleveland Guardians.
The Mariners feature another Walsh Jesuit alum and former Ohio State baseball player in the organization: outfielder Dominic Canzone, who is batting .264 with 15 home runs and an .863 OPS in 83 games this season. After being drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks, Canzone was traded to the Mariners in a package sent in return for reliever Paul Sewald in 2023.
Eckelman became the fourth Ohio State player drafted by the Mariners.
