Box scores
Highlands 31, Covington Catholic 28
A matchup billed as one of the season’s best games more than lived up to the hype as Highlands took down Covington Catholic on a last second touchdown.
The Bluebirds and Colonels traded blows back and forth all game, with the largest lead for either team coming from Highlands’s 10-0 first quarter mark. In the fourth quarter, a timely interception by Logan Sanning in the end zone saved a potential Highlands score and led to a Cash Harney touchdown run for CovCath’s first lead of the game with just 41 seconds remaining. The Bluebirds could not be denied, however, as they orchestrated a perfect drive that ended in a Rio Litmer to Tayden Lorenzen touchdown pass for the winning score with just three seconds on the clock.
Lorenzen put on a gutsy performance, scoring all four highlands touchdowns with three rushing scores and the game winning reception. He took a beating all night from a tough Colonels defense, with his final score requiring him to endure a big hit at the goal line. Quarterback Rio Litmer bounced back in a big way from a costly fourth quarter interception, leading the final drive with pinpoint accuracy to finish 14 of 19 for 175 yards and a touchdown.
Despite the loss, Covington Catholic still proved they are a top contender in Northern Kentucky. Dylan Gaiser rushed for 88 yards on just eight carries, scoring a touchdown as well. Quarterback Cash Harney contributed a touchdown with his legs alongside 227 passing yards and two scoring throws. Owen Pitzer made a huge play to keep this game within reach for CovCath, hauling in a deep bomb and then winning a footrace to house a 91-yard touchdown.
Covington Catholic drops to 4-3, and the Colonels won’t have much time to lick their wounds as they host a dangerous Cathedral football team from Indianapolis next week.
Highlands improves to 6-1, but celebrations will need to be short as they face an even bigger test next week. the Bluebirds will hit the road on Oct. 10 to play in The Pit against an undefeated Elder squad that just knocked off Moeller.

Quarterback Emmanuel Miles added a rushing score of his own. The passing game was tough to come by, as Miles ended with 91 yards passing and an interception.
