Free bases doomed the Newark Catholic baseball team on June 14.
Three walks and three errors helped Minster build an insurmountable lead in a five-run second inning as NC fell 8-0 in the Division VII state final at Canal Park in Akron.
The Green Wave were playing in their first final since 2016. They settled for their fifth runner-up finish to go with their nine championships.
Senior Mikey Hess threw 5 ⅔ innings of relief, allowing two earned runs. Sophomore Hal Gillespie led the Green Wave with two hits, and Hess, senior Miller Hutchison and junior Owen Przymierski each singled.
