Finding a good lunch in Summit County’s northern communities may seem daunting for some, but those in the know head straight for Michael’s Catering and Café.
The family-owned restaurant is located just off state Route 91 behind First National Bank.
During my visit I learned that whether serving 50 people or just myself, it’s not a bad pick.
Lunch at Michael’s Catering & Café
Michael’s has a variety of soups, sandwiches, wraps, salads, pizza, flatbreads and desserts on its menu.
Any sandwich can be made Michael’s way, with extra cheese, bacon, banana peppers, and sweet garlic mayo for an additional $2.
I ordered the Italian sub ($13), which comes with salami, capicola, pepperoni, ham, black olives, lettuce, tomato, onion and Italian dressing. I politely declined the provolone that also usually comes on the sandwich.
My entree tasted great, but next time I’ll add bacon, sweet garlic mayo and fresh basil. Being the cheese- and banana pepper-hater that I am, those additions alone are not quite cool enough to be considered Michael’s way. Maybe Beans’s way?
For a little sweet treat, I got coconut sorbet cream served in a hollowed out pineapple. The eatery has three other flavors and fruit skins that it calls fruttinis ($3).
It was a little icy at first, but once I reached the lower layers the filling proved to be an interesting blend of sorbet and ice cream in consistency.
Special offerings at Michael’s Catering & Café
While Michael’s does offer seasonal menus, it has quite a few staples that people flock to.
One of them is the Italian sub done Michael’s way. Another is the chicken mafiata, a specialty sandwich with chicken, bacon, roasted red peppers, provolone and smoked gouda, fresh basil and ranch dressing between two pitas.
Other favorites include the summer turkey, a whole grain honey wheat sub roll filled with turkey breast, bacon, smoked gouda, lettuce, tomato, onion, guacamole and a special sauce.
Lovers of spice gravitate towards Donte’s Inferno, a sub with turkey breast, bacon, provolone, cucumbers, pickles, lettuce, tomato, onion, cream cheese, jalapeños, siracha and ranch dressing.
History of Michael’s Catering & Café
Michael’s opened in 2003 under the ownership of Ron and Lee Anne Roth. At first, the eatery served breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Their son, Michael, began their foray into catering after completing the culinary arts and hospitality management program at Cuyahoga Valley Career Center.
In 2018, the couple handed over the business to Michael and his fiancée, Samantha Giatron.
While Michael’s job is to make the food taste good, it’s Giatron that handles customer service, bookkeeping and seasonal menus.
“The heart and soul of the restaurant is really Sam,” said Michael. “She does all the stuff that makes everything tick, without her this wouldn’t work.”
