Michael Brown has resigned as Hudson High School boys basketball coach after three seasons.
“I have informed my AD Mike Chuppa that I will be stepping down as the head basketball coach at Hudson High School,” Brown told the Akron Beacon Journal on Monday, July 27. “At this point, I need to take time to focus on the health of our family and our newborn baby.
“For any applicants interested, I do believe the program is in a good position for future success as we finished 51-17 in grades 9-12 last season.”
The combined record of Hudson’s varsity, junior varsity and freshmen boys basketball teams for the 2025-2026 school year was indeed 51-17.
Brown guided the Hudson varsity team to a 17-8 record last season and had a 39-34 overall record in three years with the Explorers.
“We made it to the district final game [in Division II] in back-to-back seasons,” Brown said. “After a long drought of not winning a playoff game, it was a big deal to get over that hump.”
Brown said he is looking forward to spending more time with his wife, Logan, and their son, Jaxson.
“We are grateful for all of the work coach Brown has done leading our boys basketball program over the past three seasons,” Chuppa said. “He has led with class and integrity. We wish him all the best as he takes time to focus on his family. He will always have my support. The district will post the vacancy in the coming days as we begin the search for a new head coach.”
Brown had a successful four-year run coaching the West Branch boys basketball team, leading the Warriors to 67 wins, before coming to Hudson. West Branch won Eastern Buckeye Conference titles in 2020 and 2021 with Brown to end a 20-year drought between championships.
Brown was the West Branch JV coach for two years, followed by two seasons as an assistant at Louisville, before being hired to lead the West Branch program in 2019.
As a standout guard at Louisville High School, Brown averaged 19 points, six rebounds and 4.5 assists his senior year (2009-10) when he was named Northeastern Buckeye Conference Player of the Year and an All-Ohio special mention in Division II. He helped Louisville win the NBC title that season. He played college basketball at Tiffin.
Hudson graduated four of its top players from last season — Nathan Judy, Jayden Carlton, Louie Castellarin and Fisher Zappone. Judy was third-team All-Ohio in Division II after averaging 16.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists, shooting 44% from beyond the 3-point arc. He finished his high school career with 781 points, 416 rebounds and 134 assists. Carlton was honorable mention All-Ohio after averaging 14.2 points and 3.0 rebounds, shooting 36% from deep, and finished with 894 career points.
Hudson is set to return rising seniors Trent Smith, Hayden Lipinski and Gavin Hitchcock, rising junior JT Barger and rising sophomore Colt Nelman.
