Ohio launched a new hotline to help seniors who are targeted by romance scams.
Ohioans can call 1-855-961-SCAM (7226) if they or a loved one have been victimized. Scammers establish fake online relationships − typically with older adults − with the goal of stealing the victims’ money, according to Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson’s office.
“No Ohioan should lose his or her life savings to someone pretending to care about them,” Wilson said. “These scammers are sophisticated, emotionally manipulative and, sadly, increasingly common.”
The hotline is part of a new initiative by Wilson’s office to crack down on romance scams. The launch date came weeks after federal officials revealed an alleged $15 million scheme during a news conference in Columbus.
