ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Cambridge High School girl’s track and field team proved they are not afraid of a little bit of competition Friday, April 10 at the St. Clairsville Coach Potterfield Invitational. The Lady Bobcats led the local team’s effort by scoring 82 points to finish second behind John Marshall with 88 and ahead of Steubenville and St. Clairsville in the 15-team event.
“It was an exciting night,” Cambridge coach Tamara Gibson said. “The girls stepped up competing against some tough teams tonight. The team is learning to be competitive and to have confidence in their abilities.”
Other local girls teams included Barnesville in eighth place (45) and John Glenn in tenth (32).
Paisley Williams picked up the lone first place Bobcat win by setting a new personal record, meet record, stadium record, and school record with a leap of 12-5 in the pole vault. Williams beat the nearest competitor by more than a foot.
Putting up another strong effort for the John Glenn girls was Ashlyn Kuklica with a first-place showing in both the 800-meter run (2:20.48) and the 3,200-meter run (11:33.75).
In boy’s action, Steubenville took the title with 98 points, followed by host St. Clairsville (79), Indian Valley (72), East Liverpool (55) and Garaway (45.33) to complete the top five. Cambridge (39.33) battled to a sixth-place finish, with Barnesville (38) seventh and John Glenn (35) in tenth place.
John Glenn’s Landon Cornelius turned in the lone area boys’ first place showing by winning the discus with an effort of 143’5” for the Muskies.
Saturday, April 11 Results
BASEBALL
Barnesville 3, Garaway 0: Blake Burkhart tossed six shutout innings to lead the ‘Rocks to their seventh straight victory with the non-league road win over the host Pirates on Saturday, April 11.
Burkhart finished with four strikeouts to pick up the win on the mound, with Parker Sobutka picking up the save with a pair of strikeouts for Barnesville (7-1).
Jack Anderson doubled, singled to lead the five hit Barnesville attack, with Keagan Martin added a double. Burkhart and Aidan Caldwell each contributed RBIs with fielders choice ground balls.
Tusky Valley 2, Meadowbrook 0: The Colts slipped to 4-3 on the season with the non-league setback on Saturday, April 11.
SOFTBALL

BOYS TENNIS
Cambridge tennis collects road sweep: The Bobcats tennis team traveled to Steubenville’s Bellevue Municipal Park on Saturday, April 11 and collected a sweep over both Indian Creek by a 4-1 final and Steubenville Central Catholic with the 6-1 victory to improve to 6-3 on the season.
In the first match, the Bobcats’ Jacob Vincent won at first singles 6-2, 6-0, over Jacob Crosby and Ezekiel Bergeson won at second singles 6-2, 6-0, over Sam Door.
Cambridge’s first doubles team of Quentin Stora and Tyler Oliver defeated Wyatt Jones and Damien Bruno, 6-2, 6-1. Austin Krise and Greyson Stoner beat Will Kelly and Gabe Kuroc, 6-2, 6-1 in second doubles action.
In the victory over Steubenville Central Catholic, Jacob Vincent took an 8-0 Over Noah Irvine for his second win of the day. Ezekiel Bergeson won a hard fought 9-7 match over Nat Irvine for his second win. Third singles, the Bobcats’ Quentin Stora defeated Nick Mascio 8-3 and in fourth singles, Greyson Stoner took down Christian Sollom, 8-5.
First doubles, the Bobcats Jacob Vincent and Ezekiel Bergeson shutout Irvine and Sollom, 8-0. Second doubles, Quentin Stora and Tyler Oliver lost 3-8 to Na. Irvine and Mascio. Bobcats got a forfeit in three singles.
Friday, April 10 Results
BASEBALL
Meadowbrook 3, John Glenn 2: The Colts slipped past host Muskies in an MVL crossover matchup in New Concord on Friday, April 10.
John Glenn held a 7-2 edge in hits, but yielded a bases-loaded passed ball with the game tied in the sixth inning to suffer the hard luck setback.
Kayden McDonald had two doubles and Keegan Halsey also doubled for John Glenn, which led 2-0 after five innings.
Meadowbrook improves to 4-2, while John Glenn slips to 0-7 on the season.
SOFTBALL
Cambridge 5, Barnesville 4: The Bobcats softball team snapped a four-game losing streak with a Buckeye 8 Conference victory over the Shamrocks in action Friday night at the Cambridge City Park.
The Lady Cats scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning which ended up being the difference in the game.
Senior Miranda Cole walked three times and homered in her other at bat to lead Cambridge (6-7). Kynlee Moran had two hits including a double and scored two runs. Alaceia Smith added two hits with two RBIs.
Senior Laney Harper went the distance on the mound scattering seven hits and giving up only one earned run while striking out eight.
BOYS TENNIS
Dover 5, Cambridge 0: The Bobcats tennis team was swept by the visiting Tornadoes in action on Friday, April 9 at the Cambridge City Park courts.
The Bobcats’ Jacob Vincent lost at first singles to Nathan Ricker, 3-6, 1-5. Ezekiel Bergeson lost at second singles to Jeremy Cappel, 3-6, 1-6. Loukas Laughman lost at third singles to Bryce Beckley, 0-6 and 0-6.
Cambridge’s first doubles team of Silas Hutchison and Quentin Stora lost 0-6, 1-6, to Micah Maize and Robert Wolfe and at second doubles, Tyler Oliver and Steele Britton were defeated by Nathan Basso and Maddox Miller, 0-6, 1-6.
Thursday, April 9 Results
BASEBALL
Barnesville 5, Cambridge 0: ‘Rocks starter Dylan Blon tossed a complete game one-hitter to blank the Bobcats to collect the non-league victory at Don Coss Field at Ron Antill Stadium at the Cambridge City Park on Thursday, April 9.
Blon collected seven strikeouts to earn the victory on the mound for Barnesville (6-1), improving his season mark to 2-1-1.
Senior Mason Gregg recorded the lone Cambridge hit with a single in the fourth inning as the Bobcats dropped their third straight game to slip to 5-3 on the season.
Gunner Dudzik led the ‘Rocks seven hit attack with a single, double with two RBIs, with Blake Burkhart adding a single, double and RBI. Jaxten Swallie plated a pair of RBIs with a base hit.
Gregg started on the mound for the Bobcats pitching three innings, giving up one unearned run, and striking out two. Conner Parsons relieved Gregg giving up two runs on two hits and a walk. Javon Lowery pitched the sixth inning giving up two runs before Tate Sikora struck out the side in the seventh inning.
Wednesday, April 8 Results
SOFTBALL
Caldwell 6, Shenandoah 5: Junior Matti Hesson delivered the game-winning, walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to keep Caldwell a perfect with a 8-0 with a 6-5 win over visiting Shenandoah on Wednesday, April 8.
Senior ace Makayla Mumaw improved her pitching mark to 7-0, with a complete game outing with nine strikeouts and a pair of walks.
Junior Breighlee Moracco led CHS with three hits, while sophomore Cami Arick singled with a home run and three RBIs. Mumaw and Hesson each finished with a pair of base hits.
Sophomore Allison Crum singled twice for the Zeps who slip to 2-8 with the tough loss.
Martins Ferry 18, Cambridge 7: The Bobcats softball team scored seven runs, but it wasn’t enough to keep up with the visiting Purple Riders resulting in an 18-7 setback in Buckeye 8 action at the Cambridge City Park.
Senior Miranda Cole gave the Bobcats a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run to center field, but Martins Ferry would quickly respond with four runs in the top of the second and six runs in the top of the third to take control.
Cole would add a single to go with her home run, with senior Laney Harper collecting a double and single to lead the Cambridge (5-7) offense.
BASEBALL
Barnesville 14, Bellaire 5: Jackson Vanfossen worked five innings to record his first varsity pitching win to lead Shamrocks to 5-1 record with win over Big Reds.
Vanfossen finished with seven strikeouts with a pair of walks on his big night.
Max Miller turned in a perfect 3-3 night at the plate with two RBIs, with Grant Dudzik stroking a double, single with three RBIs. Cole Atkinson added an RBI single for the ‘Rocks.
Martins Ferry 1, Cambridge 0 (10 inn.): A classic pitchers’ duel developed with the visiting Purple Riders plating an unearned run in the top of the tenth inning to hand the Bobcats the tough loss.
Cambridge senior Garrett Carpenter started and pitched nine strong innings scattering four hits and two walks while striking out nine. Carpenter was lifted after the ninth inning due to pitch count limits. Carpenter threw 129 pitches, 86 of them strikes.
Senior Mason Gregg came on in the top of the tenth inning giving up one hit and one unearned run while striking out one.
In the top of the tenth, the Riders’ leadoff hitter reached second base on a dropped fly ball to left field. The runner quickly advanced to third on a passed ball. After Gregg induced a fly out and a ground out back to the pitcher, the lone run of the game scored on a ground ball between short and third.
The Bobcats (5-2) had nine hits in the game but stranded 13 runners including two in the bottom of the tenth. Javon Lowery and Michael Micale each had two hits while Dawson Geese and Gregg each slugged a double and Cam Lauer had a triple.
BOYS TENNIS
John Marshall 7, Cambridge 1: The Bobcats tennis team took a road trip to West Virginia for a tennis match and returned with a tough loss to slip to 4-2 on the season.
Playing the West Virginia OVAC format, the Bobcats discovered a few things they need to work on before the OVAC tournament later this month.
The third doubles team of Ezekial Bergeson and Austin Krise picked up the lone win for the Bobcats with an 8-2 win over Sam Kesyer and Landon Nicks.
Tuesday, April 7 results
SOFTBALL
Meadowbrook 24, Maysville 4 (5 inn.): The Colts (4-2) blasted four homers among their 17 hits and scored 11 times in the first two innings in an MVL-Small School mercy in Byesville.
Senior standout Addy Sichina paced the effort by delivering a record breaking round tripper, swatting her 18th career home run to set the new all-time career mark at Meadowbrook. Sichina passes Morgan Modro, who played from 2014-2016 for the Colts. Sichina also holds the career RBIs record which she set last year.
Senior Sommer Ginn belted a grand slam home run to tally 4 RBIs to lead the offensive surge. Senior McKendall Boyer and junior Chloe Callaham each chipped in with solo blasts for the winners.
Sophie Dennis and Evee Matthews drove in two runs with two singles and Lily Tumblin also had two singles for Maysville, which had nine hits.
Sheridan 9, John Glenn 2: Avery Hall belted a homer, double and singled twice, as the Generals avenged their MVL-Big School loss to the Muskies on April 6 with a strong showing in New Concord in the rematch.
Megan Ranck struck out seven in a complete game to get the win, yielding five hits and no walks. Hayley Clifton helped the offense with two doubles.
Sheridan collected 12 hits off John Glenn ace Kendall Snider, who went the distance with 13 strikeouts. Six Generals had run-scoring hits.
BASEBALL
Meadowbrook 10, Maysville 1: The Colts banged out 10 hits to coast past the Panthers in the MVL-Small School Division matchup.
Senior Braylon Lowery paced Meadowbrook (3-1) with a 3-4 effort with a double, RBI with senior Cohen Miles collecting a pair of singes with two RBIs. Freshman Kolton Perez singled twice, with Austin Warner, sophomore Brady Arnold and Blake Lappert each collected base hits.
Warner picked up the win on the mound, working five innings with seven strikeouts in the contest.
Buckeye Trail 15, Cambridge 4: The Warriors improved to 2-0 following a 15-4 mercy rule victory over the visiting Bobcats on Tuesday, April 6.
Easton Rominger worked five innings to collect the win on the mound, allowing just three hits and finishing with a pair of strikeouts.
Chase Miller ripped a single and double 3 RBIs to lead the Buckeye Trail offense, with Sawyer Cox adding a pair of base hits with an RBI. Rominger helped his own casue with a single and two RBIs.
Cambridge suffered their first loss of the season, committing five errors while four pitchers gave up 10 walks and hit five Buckeye Trail batters.
Trail took advantage of the miscues to score eight runs in the first inning. Cambridge committed three errors in the inning, walked four and hit a batter.
The Bobcats, who scored two runs in the top of the first inning thanks to a Mason Gregg triple and a sacrifice fly by Dawson Geese, were unable to rebound from the six-run deficit.
Cambridge (5-1) added two more runs in the top of the third on a two-RBI double by Tate Sikora that drove in Garrett Carpenter and Geese who both were hit by pitches.
Sheridan 16, John Glenn 0 (5 inn.): Camdyn Packer tossed four no-hit innings and Connor Roshon and Cam Cashdollar combined for eight RBIs for the Generals in a mercy in New Concord.
Cashdollar drove in five runs with two singles, and Roshon had a double and single with three RBIs, as Sheridan scored in every inning and took advantage of six Muskie errors.
TRACK
Cambridge track teams sweep another tri-meet: The Bobcats boys’ and girls’ track teams both dominated a tri-meet with Barnesville and Shenandoah at Barnesville High School.
The Bobcat boys score 113 points to beat Barnesville with 80 and Shenandoah with 28. The Lady Bobcats scored 98 points to beat Barnesville with 72 and Shenandoah with 29.
Tyce Tolbert paced the Bobcats’ victory by capturing three first place finishes in the meet to lead the way.
Tolbert claimed the 100-meter dash running a 12:05 for the win, along with adding first finishes in both the 110-meter hurdles (17.05) and the 300-meter hurdles (43.29)
CHS also captured the 4×100-meter relay with Damien Shaw, Damien Kissinger, Blaize Barlow and Brayden Morris with a time of 48.26.
Kissinger, Tolbert, A.J. Lawrence, and Levi Walker won the 4×200-meter relay in 1:39.70 while the team of Grady, Spencer Rogers, Christopher Rogerson, and Bryson Holdren won the 4×400-meter relay in 4:42.16. Brayden Biddle carried the Bobcats in the distance events as he won both the 800-meter run in 2:15.32 and the 1600-meter run in 4:58.61.
In the field events, Austin Krise won the high jump clearing 5-8 and Kissinger won the long jump leaping 18-8.5
The Lady Bobcats also ran well in the sprint events with Audrina Gibson winning both the 100-meter dash in 13.13 and the 200-meter dash in 28.23.
In the 4×100 relay, Madeline Furbee, Taylor Hinson, JuJu Cook and Ermie Boreman won in a time of 57.09. Paisley Williams won the 300-meter hurdles in 53.09. Mena Ramos won the 400-meter run in 1:07.67 while Alaina Siman won the 800-meter run in 3:09.89.
Mena Ramos, Alexander, Sophia Johnston and Gibson won the 4×200-meter relay in 1:58.79. Sigman, Madelyn Phillips, Skye Craft and Marley Mathers won the 4×800-meter relay in 12:08.65.
In the field events, Bailey Anderson won the discus with a throw of 104-11 while Sophie Johnston won the long jump with a leap of 15-5.
BOYS TENNIS
Cambridge 5, Claymont 0: The Bobcats boys tennis team improved to 4-1 with the shutout over the visiting Mustangs in action on Tuesday at the Cambridge City Park courts.
In singles matches, the Bobcats’ Jacob Vincent defeated Copper Newton 6-3, 6-1 at first singles, Ezekiel Bergeson beat Korben Byers 6-3, 6-1 at second singles, and Loukas Laughman beat Gabby Best 6-2, 6-2 at third singles.
In doubles action, the first doubles team of Silas Hutchison and Quentin Stora won 6-2, 6-0 defeating Aubree Potts and Lloyd Abel, and the second doubles team of Tyler Oliver and Steele Britton handled Grace Canfield and Julie Guzman 6-0, 6-2.
Monday, April 6 results
SOFTBALL
John Glenn 4, Sheridan 2: The Muskies were down to their last strike, but Kendall Snider’s single tied the game and triggered a run of four straight hits in the top of the seventh inning a comeback win in Thornville,
Snider was on the wrong end of a pitcher’s duel with Megan Ranck for 6 2/3 innings, but she wound up with the win after striking out 12 in a complete game. Ranck took a shutout into the seventh and struck out eight.
Addison Babcock tripled and singled twice and Estelle Matheney doubled for John Glenn (8-0); Lakelyn Haas had two singles for Sheridan (4-1).
Meadowbrook 15, Maysville 4 (5 inn.): Senior McKendall Boyer drove in four runs with a three-run double and RBI single to pace the Colts in an MVL-Small School win in Newton Township.
Senior Addy Randles’ double and single netted four RBIs and the Colts also drew 13 walks. They scored eight times in the fifth as senior Addy Sichina allowed five hits, with three strikeouts to get the pitching win.
Freshman Addie Schultice, along with seniors Jordyn Vargeson and Sommer Ginn each added base hits for Meadowbrook.
Caldwell 5, River 0: A fast start jumpstarted unbeaten Caldwell to a quick start to extend their season opening win streak to six straight.
Senior Lexi Franklin banged out a two run single to give Caldwell (6-0) the quick 2-0 lead over the visiting Pilots.
Senior ace Makayla Mumaw took it from there and hurled a complete game effort, finishing with 12 strikeouts to improve her season record to 6-0.
Junior Breighlee Moracco led the Caldwell (6-0) offense with a pair of single with a triple.
Martins Ferry 13, Cambridge 0: A rough road trip resulted in the lopsided Buckeye 8 Conference setback for the Bobcats’ softball team.
The Cambridge offense was held to one fourth inning single from senior Miranda Cole and four walks as they slipped to 5-6 on the season.
Senior Laney Harper surrendered 10 hits and eight earned runs in the game while striking out four in taking the loss for the Bobcats.
BASEBALL
Cambridge 6, Martins Ferry 4: The Bobcats baseball team continued its strong start to the season with its fifth consecutive win to open the new season with the Buckeye 8 Conference road win over the Riders.
Senior Dawson Geese picked up his second win of the season on the mound for CHS. Geese racked up 11 Ks in six innings while giving up only two unearned runs and two hits.
Senior Mason Gregg came on in relief to close out the game, striking out one and surrendering two hits. He gave up a pair of unearned runs.
Tate Sikora and Cam Lauer led the Bobcats (5-0) offense with three hits, one run, and one RBI each. Gregg and Michael Micale each had two hits with Micale getting a double. Gebhart and Geese each collected doubles for the winners.
Meadowbrook 4, Maysville 2: Senior Cohen Miles worked six strong innings to lead the Colts to the MVL victory over visiting Panthers.
Miles allowed just three hits and finished with eight strikeouts, senior Tre Gray came on to close out the Colt’s win to earn the save.
Senior Steven Beach led the way at the plate with a 2-2 effort with an RBI and two stolen bases for Meadowbrook (2-1 overall, 1-1 MVL). Gray chipped in with an RBI base hit, with junior Austin Warner and sophomore Brady Arnold each adding singles.
Barnesville 24, Bellaire 2: The ‘Rocks cranked up the offense to coast past Big Reds and improve to 4-1 on the season.
Bobby Thompson enjoyed the run support and worked five strong innings with nine strikeouts to pick up the win on the mound for Barnesville.
Barnesville offensive leaders included Gunner Dudzik who doubled, singled with an RBI; Parker Sobutka singled twice with three RBIs; Jaxton Swallie singled twice with two RBIs; Braylon Lucas and Jack Anderson each singled with two RBIs; Max Miller doubled with a pair of RBIs.
Sheridan 13, John Glenn 5: Noah Wamer fired five innings of two-hit relief for the Generals, who overcame five errors by scoring five times in the fourth inning in an MVL-Big School win at home.
Wamer struck out eight and didn’t yield an earned run after the Muskies scored four times in the first two innings. to build a 4-0 lead.
Tandon Gramlich led eight Generals who had hits with a double and single and two RBIs. James Solomon and Connor Roshon added RBI doubles.
Zach Townsend drove in two runs with two singles and Keegan Wolford had two singles and scored three times for John Glenn. Carter Merry took the loss.
River 2, Caldwell 1: River righthander Kaden Hunt shut down the Caldwell offense, allowing just one run on one hit in varsity baseball action.
Hunt racked up eight strikeouts in the complete game outing to pick up the victory on the mound.
Junior Izic Cool singled for the lone Caldwell (2-1) hit in the game.
