MASSILLON ‒ Massillon Public Library workers have voted to form a union.
Workers voted May 5 to join the Service Employees International Union District 1199 representing West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio.
The vote was certified by the State Employment Relations Board, paving the way for the workers to being negotiating with the library for a contract for all employees.
About 30 employees will be represented by the union.
Vanessa Dalesandro, SEIU District 1199 regional director, said the workers organized over shared concerns about workplace conditions, fair wages and benefits, and not having a meaningful role in decisions that impact the services they provide to the community.
“The message from workers is simple: enough is enough. They are refusing to be silenced and demanding the respect, fairness, and voice on the job that every worker deserves,” Dalesandro said. “They’re standing together and making it clear that their future at the Massillon Public Library will no longer be decided without them.”
They hope to bargain with library management and build a productive relationship focused on supporting employees and maintaining quality library services for the Massillon community, the press release said.
Dalesandro submitted an information request immediately following the May 5 vote and has offered the library 10 bargaining dates beginning in late June. No bargaining dates have been confirmed, she said.
“The ball is in management’s court. Whether they choose collaboration or conflict, one thing is certain: these workers are united, they are ready to negotiate a strong first contract, and SEIU District 1199 has their backs every step of the way,” she added.
Now that the group has been certified, staff members will elect bargaining representatives and begin preparing proposals for their first contract negotiations.
Library officials said they value employees, patrons and communities.
“We will continue to follow our mission in alignment with our strategic plan,” the library said in a statement. “The Library’s mission focuses on inspiring people in our service area by offering opportunities to learn, create, and grow together. Throughout its 127-year history, Massillon Public Library has continued to reinvent itself to serve the ever-changing needs of its communities.”
Library officials said they will continue to cooperate with SERB and follow its procedures.
