Long-time physician Dr. David Scoggin receives Humanitarian Award from FMC

LANCASTER – Dr. David Scoggin, who served the Fairfield County community for 35 years, was honored on June 13 with Fairfield Medical Center’s Humanitarian Award.

Dr. Scoggin, who retired in early 2025, is one of only a handful of honorees over the past several decades to be presented with the Humanitarian Award, which is reserved for those who have made an extraordinary contribution to the betterment of healthcare in the community, according to a press release.

He was the founder of Arbor View Family Medicine and volunteered through the charitable By The Way Clinic to help the county’s most vulnerable residents. He was also the team physician for Fairfield Union High School’s athletics team for more than 20 years.

A steadfast champion of academia, he fostered the growth and development of fellow physicians since 1991, ushering new providers into the field as an adjunct professor of family medicine at The Ohio State University and later a clinical preceptor for the Ohio University School of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Jeremy Buckley of FHP Cardiology was one of the many medical students Dr. Scoggin mentored over the years. He recalls the valuable lessons he learned from his mentor during that time, particularly the importance of building connections and trust with patients while caring for them with empathy and compassion.

“Dave knew every patient and the name of every patient’s kid, spouse or dog,” Dr. Buckley recalled in the release. “We worked out of paper charts back then, but he spent very little time in the chart and most of the time listening. He built trust. He delivered good news and occasionally bad news, but always with trust.”

In addition to his dedicated service to his patient and community, Dr. Scoggin served on FMC’s Board of Directors as Chair of the Quality and Safety Committee and the Medical Staff Quality Committee. He also supported patient care as Chair of the Fairfield Community Health Partner’s Board of Managers.

Along with the Humanitarian Award, Dr. Scoggin also received a proclamation on June 13 from Ohio Governor Mike DeWine that acknowledged his accomplishments and contributions to healthcare and the community.
