The drop is a multi-day event held throughout Ohio, ensuring that local Girl Scouts from the nearly 900 troops across Central Ohio get the boxes of cookies they need in order to open their booths. While selling cookies, Girl Scouts help fund their programs while learning skills like goal setting, money managment and interpersonal communication.
Rhonda Carver with the local Girl Scouts said the program also teaches girls confidence, unity and more while opening up the doors to new opportunities.
“It’s an amazing program,” said Carver.
The distribution event in Yoctangee Park for local troops saw thousands of boxes — each one filled with one of the nine available cookies — sorted, counted and unloaded from a semi-trailer into various vehicles. Some troop leaders brought along multiple cars, and others brought trailers to help load their haul back to their troop.
Each case contained 12 boxes of cookies, meaning that thousands of boxes of cookies were distributed during this event. Some troops sold fewer than 100 cases during preorder, while others sold over 300 cases. These boxes are mainly preorders, and more will be delivered as scouts continue to sell in the coming weeks.
This year, a new cookie flavor is available to customers. Inspired by rocky road ice cream, the Exploremores feature chocolate, marchmallow and almond flavors. The cookie is quickly becoming a favorite amongst scouts.
Delilah Leggett is nine years old and has been a Girl Scout for four years. She started selling door-to-door earlier this year in an effort to reach her goal of selling over 1,000 boxes. She said he favorite is the new Exploremores.
Seven-year-old Emma McKean has been a member of the Girl Scouts for three years. This year, she has already sold over 1,000 boxes and hopes to sell more. Her favorite part of cookie season is getting to eat the tasty treats; her new favorite is the Exploremores, since her previous favorite was discontinued last year.
Those helping organize the drop said that while pallets of all flavors are deliverd there are often clear favorites. This year, the Chillicothe drop saw Thin Mints being ordered the most and Toffee-tastic being ordered the least.
Girl Scout Cookies cost $6 per package and can be bought online or at a local cookie booth.
