No guests are allowed at The Mansfield Hotel on 500 N. Trimble Road until a new roof and other repairs can be completed.
The hotel, which is temporarily closed, had repairs and changes mandated following a recent inspection by the Mansfield Fire Department and City of Mansfield codes and permits office.
But, on Jan. 19, Mansfield firefighters responded to the hotel at 11 p.m. for an emergency call and found multiple doors chained and padlocked from the inside while occupants of the hotel were sleeping and living, according to the fire department report.
Hotel Manager Mary Hunter unlocked the padlock and removed the chains, according to the fire report, which the News Journal obtained via a public records request.
City of Mansfield Building Codes and Permits Official Marc Milliron said no guests are allowed to stay at the hotel due to its safety issues, but three employees are living at the hotel until new housing can be found for them.
The people who were inside the hotel were not guests who paid to stay.
Mansfield police also responded to the scene, according to the police report, which was listed as a financial crime incident.
On. Jan 12, the hotel was given a 60-day order to complete needed fixes to the building or face condemnation by the City of Mansfield.
The city’s codes and permits office inspected the hotel Jan. 8 with the Mansfield Fire Department at the request of the State Fire Marshal’s Office and determined that the building had several fire concerns or problems that “endanger life, health, or other buildings or property,” according to the city’s building and codes report.
