By the time the fourth quarter rolled around in the Ohio State-Ohio U football game on Sept. 13, the Peacock broadcast urged viewers to watch another game.
While the Buckeyes led the Bobcasts 37-9 with under two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Peacock announcers Paul Burmeister and Chris Simms hinted that fans could watch a more interesting game on NBC’s main channel.
“Chris [Simms] and I would miss you if you left, but we would understand if you want to flip over to NBC,” Paul Burmeister said. “Heck of a game going on in South Bend.”
The game in reference was the shootout between Notre Dame and Texas A&M, ranked No. 8 and No. 16, respectively, heading into their Week 2 matchup. During an injury timeout for an Ohio Bobcat player with 1:45 remaining in the Ohio State game, Notre Dame had retaken the lead from the Aggies 31-28 with 8:17 remaining in the third quarter.
“Why are you still listening to us?” Simms asked the viewers. “Go to the real NBC. It’s company-on-company crime; we’re OK with that. And that’s a good one right there; we know this one’s over.”
Simms then gave an example to a family member who left the Peacock broadcast to watch the game on NBC − his mother.
“Even my mom changed the channel,” Simms added, “My mom, Diana, changed the channel. She just texted me, she’s like, ‘We stopped watching.’ “
The score remained 37-9 in the Ohio State-Ohio U game for the rest of the contest. The Aggies came back to beat the Fighting Irish 41-40, with five additional back-and-forth scores before Texas A&M secured the win.
