I doubt Carey Coleman can fit his ego inside Ohio’s 13th Congressional District, the district he hopes to represent, but I begrudgingly respect him for running at all.
There was a period when I would sometimes tune in to his radio show. With unshakeable, unjustified confidence, he’d dissect society’s ills and bemoan this world of fools. I eventually wondered, “If you’re so smart, why don’t you run for office?” And here we are. I tip my hat.
Mind you, I never listened to his show because I share his extreme views. Few in OH-13 do, since his politics are located to the right of Fox News. But when I’d listen with ironic detachment, his vast conspiracy theories to explain away aspects of reality he doesn’t like would strike me as speculative fiction, or maybe material for a cheap political thriller. His absurdity could entertain me, when I was in the right mood.
That said, I couldn’t listen to any particular episode very long. His anger and paranoia would grow tiresome, and I’d find some of his choices, like his regular use of the word “libtard,” distasteful enough to take the fun out of the party. The last time I checked in, he was detailing why the Democratic Party should be designated a terrorist organization. This wasn’t an off-hand remark. It was the main topic of that night’s show, the last I listened to because I had finally realized he’s far more poisonous than clownish.
Shortly before I wrote this, Coleman invited the incumbent to three debates, which is overkill. His unsuitability can be demonstrated in one. Anyway, Emilia Sykes has spent the past two years representing the district well, and Coleman has spent that time expressing utter hatred toward the majority of its inhabitants. What is there to debate?
