Thunderstorm warning expires, rain expected to continue in Columbus

A severe thunderstorm warning issued for eastern Franklin County expired May 20 after the storm weakened below severe limits, though rainy conditions are expected to linger throughout the day.

The National Weather Service said the storm that prompted the warning “weakened below severe limits and no longer poses an immediate threat to life or property,” allowing the warning to expire at 7:30 a.m.

Even with the warning ending, central Ohio is still expected to see periods of rain and thunderstorms through much of May 20.

Forecasters are calling for showers and thunderstorms before 1 p.m., followed by more showers and possible storms into the afternoon. The high temperature is expected to reach around 70 degrees, with northwest winds shifting north later in the day.

The chance for precipitation for May 20 sits at 80%, with rainfall totals of a tenth to a quarter inch possible, though locally higher amounts could occur in thunderstorms.

Rain chances are expected to gradually decrease tonight, though isolated showers could linger before 8 p.m. Skies are forecast to remain mostly cloudy overnight with lows around 48 degrees.
