CANTON ‒ A man from the city’s northwest section is facing 11 criminal charges, accused of firing a gun toward Worley Elementary School in an attempt to harm his live-in girlfriend and her children.
Police arrested the 24-year-old shortly after being called to the area at 2:37 p.m. July 9 in response to a complaint that shots were fired.
The suspect lives in the 2200 block of Myrtle Avenue NW, across the street from the school at 1340 23rd St. NW.
A police report says the man fired a gun over the street from his home toward the school, where officers found the 27-year-old woman with two of her children, ages 7 and 8.
Officers arrived to find the suspect leaving through his front door. They handcuffed him. The couple’s 9-month-old daughter was found on the living room couch.
The woman told police the couple was arguing over her 8-year-old son having pink eye.
A neighbor had told a dispatcher that the woman screamed and ran from the house with her two older children. He heard two shots.
The police report said a video recording from the school showed her running from the house and appearing to move to duck to evade bullets while running toward the school.
The suspect is charged with discharging a weapon into a home or school, discharge of a firearm on or near prohibited premises and three counts each of felonious assault, endangering children and domestic violence.
He is scheduled to be arraigned July 11 in Canton Municipal Court.
