The Akron Zoo’s Komodo Kingdom Café is greener than the lettuce it serves on its veggie burger.
The Green Restaurant Association has named the eatery the 2026 Greenest Zoo Restaurant.
To earn the designation, the zoo implemented 77 environmental steps at the cafe to earn some 366 GreenPoints.
They ranged from reducing energy usage by installing a geothermal heat pump, LED lighting, restroom occupancy sensors and a solar array.
Other factors checklist of seven categories include: disposables, energy, sustainable food, sustainable furnishings and building, pollution and chemical reduction, waste and water.
The Komodo Kingdom Café has been designated a 4-star Green Restaurant since 2012 and was the first zoo restaurant in the country and the second restaurant in Ohio to earn 4-stars by the association.
