Bengals should call DeAndre Hopkins after WR’s Joe Burrow comments

Back in March, Cincinnati Bengals fans thought a post by free agent DeAndre Hopkins might be about his wanting to link up with Joe Burrow.

Not long after that, Hopkins caught a touchdown from Burrow at a flag football tournament.

Now? Hopkins is making the rounds in public, basically confirming that he’d like to sign with the Bengals.

“I think Joe is one of the best,” Hopkins during an interview at the Kentucky Derby. “I love his game, his toughness. He took his team to a Super Bowl early in his career and I feel like he can get back there with a little bit of help.”

At this point, it shouldn’t shock fans that big-name players wnat to join the Bengals and play with Burrow on a contender.

The only question is: Should they?

Why not?

When we broke down whether the Bengals should sign Hopkins or Odell Beckham, the outcome was that simple. Guys behind Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins didn’t step up. That’s most notable with Andrei Iosvias. The fact they drafted Colbie Young in the fourth round sort of says it all.

But Young’s addition shouldn’t stop the Bengals from adding a veteran. Especially a veteran who can be another mentor for the rookie while productive on the field.

Hopkins turns 34 in June. But his last contract was a mere $5 million and he’s not exactly out in public making leverage plays right now. He has said and shown that he can play the slot, if needed.

The Bengals are a little tight on cap space for now. But they’re not in a position to scoff at improving roster depth.
