Winter storm warnings were issued by the National Weather Service office in Binghamton and remain in effect until 7 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27.
The warning applies to Broome, Delaware, Chenango, Cortland, Otsego and Sullivan counties.
Heavy snow was forecast to develop early in the evening with the heaviest precipitation anticipated between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., before winding down into early Saturday. Travel could be very difficult and the hazardous conditions could impact the Friday evening commute, the NWS warned.
In total, 5-8 inches of snow could accumulate across the region.
The storm forced the rescheduling of the two-day holiday celebration hosted by Broome County Festival of Lights and Spiedie Fest, while the DMV in Endicott will be closed on Saturday, Dec. 27.
What is a winter storm warning?
The National Weather Service issues warnings based on local impacts. A winter storm in Texas might trigger a warning with far less snow than the same storm in Wisconsin, because local infrastructure, typical weather and public safety needs differ.
