Where Andover-Whitesville sits in state rankings ahead of regional

Section V basketball champions have been crowned.

But high school basketball-style March Madness continues in the state tournament for Fairport in Class AAA, Penfield (Class AA), Lyons (C) and Andover-Whitesville (D).

Andover-Whitesville is off to the Far West Regional on Friday night after winning the merged program’s first-ever Section V boys basketball title. Andover-Whitesville will meet Clymer/Sherman/Panama of Section VI with tip-off scheduled for 8 p.m. at Buffalo State College, with the winner punching its ticket to the state Final Four.

Meanwhile, Pittsford Mendon, Monroe, Bishop Kearney/Chesterton, LeRoy and Honeoye suffered season-ending losses since winning Section V titles last weekend. Canisteo-Greenwood fell to BK/Chesterton in the Class B finals.

All of those teams remain listed in the latest New York State Sportswriters Association rankings. The NYSSWA ranks teams in the classes that have state tournaments.

Here are the state-ranked teams in Section V and details for what is next for teams moving on:

Section V Class B boys basketball

No. 7 Bishop Kearney/Chesterton (last week No. 21)

Along the baseline: The Kings (21-4) won the Section V Class B2 Championship by pulling away from state-ranked Canisteo-Greenwood and then defeated LeRoy, 76-61, in a qualifier game for the state tournament on March 9. That victory put Bishop Kearney/Chesterton into a state tournament pre-quarterfinal March 11. Olmstead, a sectional champion in the Buffalo region, defeated the Kings 65-56 at Buffalo State.

No. 13 East Rochester (last week No. 12)

Along the baseline: The season ended for the Bombers (17-5) with a 62-59 loss to Bishop Kearney/Chesterton during the Section V Class B2 semifinals.

No. 14 Canisteo-Greenwood (last week: No. 3)

Along the baseline: The Chargers (18-4) lost 82-58 to Bishop Kearney/Chesterton in the Section V Class B2 Tournament Final, leaving Canisteo-Greenwood one win short of the first Section V title as a merged team.

No. 21 LeRoy (not ranked last week)

Along the baseline: The Oatkan Knights are Section V basketball champions for the first time since 2003, after rallying in the fourth quarter to defeat Mynderse, 58-50, in the Class B1 final. LeRoy then lost, 76-61, to Bishop Kearney/Chesterton in a state tournament qualifier March 9.

Section V Class C boys basketball

No. 2 Honeoye (last week No. 2)

Along the baseline: The Bulldogs, state finalist in 2025, won the Section V Class C1 Championship when they defeated York, 58-53. Landon Washburn, a 6-foot-7 junior who has scored more than 2,000 varsity points, finished with 29 in the tournament final. Honeoye needed to get past state-ranked Lyons in a state tournament qualifier March 11, but lost, 70-56, to the Lyons at Finger Lakes Community College. Washburn scored 30 points versus Lyons, with three 3-pointers.

No. 4 Lyons (last week No. 4)

Next up: The Lions (23-2) vs. Buffalo Global Concepts Charter (18-4), the Section VI champion, state tournament quarterfinal, 4:30 p.m. March 14 at Buffalo State .

Lyons, state-ranked most of the season, stopped No. 2 state-ranked Honeoye, 70-56, in a state tournament qualifier March 11 . . . 6-foot-6 senior center No. 34 Jamire “JJ” Johnson, a 2025 Democrat and Chronicle All-Greater Rochester Team member, finished with 27 points and 15 rebounds versus Honeoye . . . 6-foot-2 senior forward No. 4 Stephen LeBrecht 11 points, 11 steals, 5 rebounds . . . Senior guard No. 12 Contrell Parker Jr. 15 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists . . . Global Concepts Gators: Team is a three-and-a-half headed monster offensively, led by 6-3 senior forward No. 5 Eric Davis Jr. at 18.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per game . . . Sophomore guard No. 1 Jose Castro 14.1 ppg., 6.7 rpg, 5.5 assists per game; Junior guard No. 2 Josiah Clay 11.4 ppg. . . . Global Concepts’ most recent game: Defeated Westfield 54-45 . . . 6-foot sophomore forward No. 4 Jaiden Bennefield 21 points, 9 rebounds; Davis Jr. 15 points, 3 blocked shots; Castro Jr. 2 points, 9 rebounds, 9 assist, 2 steals; Clay 5 points, 5 steals; Previous four opponents scored 34, 56, 44 and 50 points, respectively . . . Global Concepts is at No. 5 in state rankings.

No. 8 Geneseo (last week No. 7)

Along the baseline: Geneseo (21-3) won 15 games in a row, before losing, 87-59, to Lyons in the Section V Class C1 Tournament Final. The Blue Devils were one win away from the team’s first sectional basketball title since 2017.

No. 10 Gananda (last week No. 13)

Along the baseline: The Panthers (19-4) lost, 72-58, to No. 1 seed Lyons in the semifinals of the Section V Class C1 Tournament. Gananda’s only sectional title came in 2007.

No. 13 York (last week No. 22)

Along the baseline: The Golden Knights (17-7) lost to Honeoye, 58-53, in the Section V Class C2 Tournament Final. Count the York Golden Knights, sectional champions in 2025 and 2022 as one of the top small-schools teams in Section V.

No. 14 Cuba-Rushford (last week No. 9)

Along the baseline: The Rebels (19-3) lost to York in the Section V Class C2 Tournament semifinals. The Rebels seek their first sectional championship since 2017.

No. 17 Pembroke (last week No. 19)

Along the baseline: The Dragons lost, 54-31, to No. 2 seed Geneseo in the Section V Class C1 Tournament semifinals. Pembroke was the C2 sectional champion in 2023.

No. 20 Fillmore (last week No. 20)

Along the baseline: A drive by Fillmore (19-3) to win sectional titles in back-to-back years ended in the Class C2 tournament quarterfinals.

Section V Class D boys basketball

No. 3 Andover/Whitesville (last week: No. 3)

Next up: Andover-Whitesville (21-2) vs. Clymer (16-6), the Buffalo region champion, state tournament quarterfinal, 8 p.m. March 13 at Buffalo State .

No. 10 Elba (last week No. 6)

Along the baseline: Elba (17-7) seeks another sectional title, the team’s first since 2017, after losing, 54-47, in the Section V Tournament Final.

No. 18 Jasper-Troupsburg (last week No. 18)

Along the baseline: The Wildcats (14-8) lost to the Elba Lancers during the Section V tournament semifinals.

Section V Class AAA boys basketball

No. 6 Fairport (last week No. 7)

Next up: The Red Raiders (21-1) vs. Jamestown (18-4), the Section VI or Buffalo region champion, state quarterfinal game, 5 p.m. March 13 at Buffalo State

Fairport fell behind very early in the Section V final but then rolled to a 77-43 win . . . 6-foot-5 forward uniform number 15 Noah Meabon scored 21 points and was a strong presence as a defender . . . 6-3 senior guard/forward No. 10 Alex Grejda had 19 points, with three 3-pointers . . . 6-4 senior forward No. 24 Hadi Dergham (13) and senior guard/forward No. 12 Jon Roessel (9) were among the nine Red Raiders who scored . . . Jamestown Red & Green: No. 1 Dominic Gonzalez, 6 feet-0 inches tall senior guard, leads Jamestown in scoring at 19.7 points per game. Gonzalez makes 42.1% of his 3-point shots and averages 3.6 assists . . . No. 0 Elijah Farmer, 6-5 senior F/G, 16.6 points and 9.5 rebounds . . . No. 2 Gavin Johnson, 5-11 senior guard, 14.5 points per game . . . Jamestown’s most recent game: Gonzalez scored 24 points with 8 rebounds and 6 assists; Farmer 17 points; Johnson 18 points, with three 3-pointers against Buffalo Health Sciences . . . Jamestown is at No. 16 in state rankings.

Section V Class AA boys basketball

No. 1 Penfield (last week No. 1)

Next up: The Patriots (22-1) vs. North Tonawanda Lumberjacks (17-7), the Section VI or Buffalo region champion, state quarterfinal game, 6:30 p.m. March 13 at Buffalo State .

Four Patriots scored in double-figures as Penfield moved into the state tournament with a 63-48 win over Pittsford Mendon . . . 6-5 junior guard No. 4 CJ Johnson (19 points, two 3-pointers); 6-9 junior center No. 32 Jake McCarthy (15); 6-6 junior guard No. 1 Jackson Green (14); junior guard No. 5 Aaron Hardaway (10) . . . 6-4 senior forward Ryan Savino scored the remaining five points . . . North Tonawanda Lumberjacks: Just two Lumberjacks score in double-figures game-to-game, but they seem similar to Fairport on paper. Consider 6-5 senior forward No. 20 Brody Sparks (9.2), senior guard No. 3 Blake Suitor (8.5) and No. 14 Spencer Juliano (7.9) as reliable contributors. Junior guard No. 10 AJ Cinquino averages 6.5 points . . . The leaders are 6-5 senior forward No. 21 Jack Giancola (15.5) and senior guard No. 4 Ethan DeVantier (12.7) . . . North Tonawanda’s most recent game: Defeated Orchard Park 51-45, the fifth time in six games North Tonawanda’s opponent failed to score 50 or more points. The exception was a 57-46 loss to Williamsville North . . . Suitor (11 points, 5 steals), Juliano (11 points) and Giancola (10 points, 7 rebounds) led the Lumberjacks past Orchard Park . . . No. 30 state ranking.

No. 4 Pittsford Mendon (last week No. 6)

Along the baseline: The Vikings (22-2) defeated Greece Athena, 64-63, in the Section V Class AA2 Tournament Final. Mendon then lost to 63-48 to No. 1 state-ranked Penfield in a state tournament qualifier game. Trevor Nally scored 19 points, with two 3-pointers; Joshua Shadders 12, with one 3-pointer; Carmen Esposito 10, one 3-pointer.

Section V Class A boys basketball

No. 9 Monroe (last week No. 26)

Along the baseline: Monroe (17-6) had its best season in decades, since 1982 if winning a Section V championship is the standard . . . While the Red Jackets had no state tournament qualifier to play in order to advance out of Section V, their next game was a state tournament pre-quarterfinal March 11. Grand Island, the Buffalo region champion, defeated Monroe, 77-51, at Buffalo State.

No. 14 East High (last week No.7)

Along the baseline: East High (14-5) was stopped in the Section V semifinals by Monroe, another team in the Rochester City Athletic Conference. The team’s other losses this season were to Fairport, Rich Township (Pa.), Erie (Pa.) and University Prep.

No. 21 Wayne (last week No. 19)

Along the baseline: The Eagles (19-4) came very close to a three-peat or three sectional championships in three years, falling 49-47 to Monroe. The Eagles won 16 games in a row before reaching the Rochester Community War Memorial at Blue Cross Arena.
