Was Dominic Zvada the Giants' most surprising player of the offseason?

There are plenty of new faces to get to know this summer at the New York Giants’ training camp, from the coaching staff all the way down to the end of the roster.

With a new head coach in town, John Harbaugh, Big Blue will have quite a roster turnover this season. One unit that will be completely overhauled is special teams. The Giants have a new punter in Jordan Stout and will have new long snappers, holders, and a new kicker.

The kicking role is wide open with undrafted rookie free agent (UDFA) Dominic Zvada and incumbent Ben Sauls. So far, Zvada, a record-setting performer while at Michigan, has a slight lead over Sauls for the job.

“He has looked good,” Harabugh said of Zvada at minicamp in early June. “Same thing you’ve seen. You haven’t seen as many of the practices. What you saw yesterday was what he’s been all the way through. He’s been consistent and done a good job.”

Zvada has been identified as the Giants’ biggest surprise player this offseason by ESPN.

Zvada, an undrafted free agent, went into this spring basically as the No. 3 kicker,” writes ESPN Giants reporter Jordan Raanan. “Veteran Jason Sanders was considered the favorite this season. But before the spring was even over, Sanders was cut and Zvada became the front-runner ahead of Ben Sauls. It probably helped that the media didn’t see Zvada miss this spring and he went 13-for-13 on field goal attempts at minicamp.

Special teams have been a huge problem for the Giants in recent years. Harbaugh and general manager Joe Schoen have taken special teams into account in many of their roster decisions since teaming up in January.
